Windows Task Scheduler can start your streaming encoder automatically when the PC boots or when you sign in. It does not keep a YouTube stream online through every crash, power failure, network outage, or YouTube interruption. To use it, first configure and test YouTube Live and your encoder, then create and test a task using the trigger that matches how the encoder runs.

Before you schedule the encoder

Enable YouTube live streaming

Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until just before the planned start. Follow YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Create the stream and protect its key

In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s YouTube connection settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.

Test the encoder manually

Before building a scheduled task, start the encoder yourself with the intended video or playlist and confirm that YouTube receives the feed. Verify the selected stream, URL, key, and encoder configuration. Task Scheduler launches a program; it does not configure YouTube or supply a universal OBS command line. Record the executable and any arguments only after you have confirmed that the setup works.

Choose a startup or logon trigger

Microsoft Task Scheduler supports both system-start and user-logon triggers. Microsoft’s schtasks create documentation names these schedules ONSTART and ONLOGON; its Task Triggers overview describes startup and logon as event-based triggers.

  • Use startup (ONSTART) if the encoder can run as Windows starts and does not depend on an interactive desktop or user-loaded profile.
  • Use logon (ONLOGON) if the encoder needs the signed-in user’s session, visible desktop, or profile. Test with the same Windows account and session conditions you intend to use for the stream.

There is no universal best trigger for every encoder. Choose based on the encoder’s requirements and verify the behavior under your intended account.

Create the Task Scheduler task

  1. Open Task Scheduler. Search for “Task Scheduler” from the Windows Start menu and open the desktop app.
  2. Create a task. In the Actions pane, choose Create Task rather than assuming a basic task will expose every setting you need. Give it a recognizable name, such as “YouTube encoder.”
  3. Choose the trigger. Open the Triggers tab, select New, and set the task to begin At startup or At log on, according to the choice above. Confirm the trigger and save it.
  4. Set the launch action. On the Actions tab, select New and choose Start a program. Browse to the actual encoder executable installed on your PC. If the tested encoder setup requires arguments, enter those exact arguments in the optional arguments field; do not copy a generic command line and assume it will work.
  5. Review task conditions and settings. Check any conditions that could prevent the task from starting in your intended operating environment. The exact available options and their effect depend on your Windows configuration and encoder; test the saved task rather than relying on a setting name alone.
  6. Save and test. Save the task, select it in the Task Scheduler library, and use Run. Confirm that the encoder starts and that YouTube receives the feed. Then test the chosen trigger itself by restarting Windows or signing out and back in, as appropriate.

Microsoft’s command-line example for a startup-triggered program is schtasks /create /tn MyApp /tr c:appsmyapp.exe /sc onstart. It demonstrates syntax only; replace the example executable with your installed encoder and use only arguments you have tested. It is not a ready-to-run OBS command.

What a scheduled launch does—and does not—guarantee

A trigger tells Windows when to attempt to start the configured program. That alone does not guarantee continuous service. The PC still needs power, Windows must be running, the network must be available, the stream key must remain valid, the media must be usable, and the encoder and YouTube connection must continue working. A scheduled launch also does not establish automatic recovery from an encoder crash or every interruption on YouTube’s side. Treat the task as launch automation, not a complete monitoring and recovery system.

Plan for streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a continuous stream longer than that threshold producing one complete automatic archive. If you need a complete copy, plan suitable stream segments or record separately, and verify that your chosen recording workflow meets your needs.

Troubleshoot a task that does not start or stream

  • The task runs, but the encoder does not appear: Check the action’s executable path and any arguments against the encoder installation and the manually tested setup. Try Run from Task Scheduler to isolate launch problems from trigger timing.
  • The encoder starts only after you sign in: It may rely on an interactive session or user profile. Test an At log on trigger under the account intended for streaming rather than assuming a startup trigger will behave the same way.
  • The encoder opens, but YouTube receives no feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, and confirm that the selected YouTube stream is the one you intend to use. If the key was exposed or reset, update the encoder.
  • The task works manually but not at the intended trigger: Compare the account and session used for the manual test with those available at startup or logon. Test the task under the same operating conditions planned for the stream; the cited Windows and YouTube instructions do not establish one set of unattended settings for every encoder.
  • The stream stops after it has started: A launch trigger does not diagnose or recover every encoder, power, network, or YouTube interruption. Check the PC, connection, encoder, and YouTube stream status, then decide whether you need a separately configured monitoring and recovery approach.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home PC and connection to be part of the streaming chain, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
