To copy FFmpeg logs from a VPS, first find where the running process writes its output—or capture a new run with FFmpeg’s -report option. Save the relevant log as a file, then run scp on your local computer to download it over SSH. The exact source depends on how FFmpeg was started: it may be a report file, a systemd journal, a supervisor’s output, a terminal, or a redirected file.

Choose the log source that matches how FFmpeg was started

Situation Where to look Key limitation
You are starting or restarting FFmpeg Have that invocation write an FFmpeg report with -report or FFREPORT. The report covers that invocation, not earlier output. -report also enables debug-level verbosity and can create a large file.
FFmpeg is an existing systemd service Query the actual unit with journalctl -u, if its output is connected to the journal. Requires the correct unit, journal capture, and sufficient permissions.
FFmpeg runs another way Find the supervisor, terminal, or configured stdout/stderr destination. The location and retrieval steps depend on how the process was launched.

FFmpeg’s default logging destination is stderr. That does not mean every running process has a saved log file: output may only have appeared in a terminal or may have been collected by a process manager. An existing invocation cannot retrospectively produce a complete report with -report.

Write a report for a new FFmpeg run

Run FFmpeg from a directory where the account can write. Add -report to the existing command, preserving its input and output arguments:

ffmpeg -report [your existing input and output arguments]

The bracketed phrase is explanatory; replace it with the actual arguments rather than typing it literally. FFmpeg writes a timestamp-named report in the current working directory. The report contains the command line and log output, and -report implies debug verbosity. Check the directory from which FFmpeg was launched if the report is not where you expected.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Use a specific report filename

To set a chosen filename and an info-level log level, use the documented FFREPORT form:

FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg [your existing arguments]

Here too, replace the bracketed explanation with your actual FFmpeg arguments. The filename is relative to the current working directory unless you supply a path. FFREPORT environment-variable parsing errors are not fatal and may not appear in the report, so verify that the file exists and is non-empty.

Retrieve logs from an existing systemd service

Use this route only if FFmpeg is managed by systemd and its standard output or error is available through the journal. Replace the example unit name and time window with the actual service and incident period.

Inspect a recent window

sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '30 minutes ago' --no-pager

-u filters journal entries by unit. The example asks for the last 30 minutes; adjust the interval to include the failure and the events immediately before it. --no-pager avoids interactive paging when collecting output.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Save a bounded time range to a file

sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '2026-10-03 20:00:00 UTC' --until '2026-10-03 20:30:00 UTC' --no-pager > ffmpeg-journal.log

The date and times are an example, not a universal incident window; replace them with the relevant range. The shell writes ffmpeg-journal.log in the current directory of the account running the command. Confirm that the output covers the needed period and is not empty before downloading it. Journal access varies: use your account’s permitted access or ask an authorized administrator. If the unit is unknown, identify the actual systemd service rather than guessing its name.

Find logs when systemd is not collecting them

If FFmpeg is not a journal-connected systemd service, identify how it was launched before looking for a file. Check the service manager or supervisor configuration for stdout/stderr destinations, the shell command or script for redirection, and the working directory for an FFmpeg report. If it was started interactively, output may have gone only to that terminal. Do not assume an existing process has a complete, downloadable log just because it is still running.

Download the log from your local computer with scp

Once you know the remote file path, open a terminal on your local computer—not the VPS shell—and run:

scp user@your-vps.example:/path/to/ffmpeg-journal.log .

Replace the example username, host, and remote path with your SSH login details and actual file location. The final . saves the file in the local terminal’s current directory. For a report in the remote account’s home directory, use its actual absolute path or a path such as ~/ffreport.log.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Use a non-default SSH port

scp -P 2222 user@your-vps.example:/path/to/ffmpeg-journal.log .

Capital -P selects the SSH port. Lowercase -p has a different purpose: it preserves file times and mode bits. OpenSSH 9.0 and later use SFTP over SSH by default for scp; the command remains scp.

Check a failed transfer

  • Authentication fails: confirm the SSH username, host, port, and identity key, and that the account is allowed to connect.
  • The remote file is not found: check the path on the VPS and the directory where the report or redirected journal output was created.
  • Permission is denied: check whether the login account can read the file. If the file is restricted, have an authorized administrator provide an accessible copy rather than bypassing permissions.
  • scp is unavailable locally: use a local OpenSSH client or another SSH/SFTP client available on your computer.

Match the log to YouTube’s stream diagnostics

Use timestamps to compare the FFmpeg report or journal window with the timestamped errors in YouTube Live Control Room and its stream-health dashboard. YouTube recommends checking encoder-side picture and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, an archive where available, and outbound internet connectivity. Its error guidance also covers ingest format and codecs, bitrate, audio/video configuration, keyframe frequency, and resolution. A matching time window helps distinguish an FFmpeg or encoding symptom from a connectivity problem or an ingest-setting mismatch.

Prepare a useful, safe troubleshooting report

  • Include the relevant time window and the exact FFmpeg command, but remove stream keys, tokens, credentials, and private URLs before sharing.
  • Review for other sensitive details such as IP addresses and redact them where appropriate without removing the error text or timing needed to diagnose the issue.
  • Include the FFmpeg version/build banner, what you expected to happen, what happened instead, and whether the issue is reproducible.
  • Keep the original log intact privately if you need it for later comparison; share a redacted copy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the larger problem is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than diagnosing an FFmpeg process on your VPS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.

The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
