To loop one sleep-sounds file indefinitely with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i input and use -re to read the file at its natural rate for live output. For YouTube Live, add the current ingest URL and stream key, choose compatible audio/video settings, and test before relying on the stream. This keeps FFmpeg sending media while the Windows PC and connection stay available; it does not by itself provide 24/7 uptime or automatic recovery.
Loop one sleep-sounds file with FFmpeg
Install a Windows FFmpeg build and confirm that ffmpeg runs from PowerShell or Command Prompt. The command below is an illustrative audio-only pattern, not a verified end-to-end command. Replace the file path and destination with values appropriate to your setup and live platform:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathtosleep-sounds.mp3" -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"-rereads a file at its native rate (equivalent to-readrate 1), rather than allowing FFmpeg to read it as fast as possible. FFmpeg describes this as mainly for simulating a capture device or live input when reading from a file. Do not apply low read rates to a genuine live or capture input; FFmpeg warns this can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the-iit applies to.-inames the media file. Use a valid Windows path; quotation marks protect paths containing spaces.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at 128 Kbps for this example. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, but follow its current guidance and the requirements of your chosen stream setup. A video-bearing feed may be required or more appropriate for a particular setup; an audio-only command does not guarantee that the destination will accept it.-f flvselects the FLV output container commonly used with RTMP-style ingest. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports your chosen output and use the protocol and ingest details supplied by the platform.- The final argument is a placeholder, not a real URL. Keep the stream key private; treat it like a password.
For YouTube, its current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a keyframe interval recommended at two seconds and not exceeding four seconds. For stereo AAC or MP3 it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended advanced settings. These are platform recommendations, not a bitrate prescription for every resolution or connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a speed test, a test stream, and monitoring stream health and messages.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Check that live streaming is available for your channel and that the chosen stream setup accepts the media you plan to send.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder destination in the format required by your FFmpeg build and the selected protocol. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe where to obtain these values.
- Start with a short test. Confirm that the preview appears, audio is audible, the stream health indicator is satisfactory, and the loop transitions as expected. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Go live only after checking the Live Control Room status. Keep it open during initial testing so you can see stream-health warnings and correct settings or connectivity problems.
Never publish a script, screenshot, or log that exposes the key. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update FFmpeg with the new key.

Loop several sleep sounds as a playlist
If you want variety instead of repeating one recording, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text playlist and process the files in order. Create a plain playlist such as:

file 'C:/sleep-stream/night-forest.mp3'The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, codecs, and time bases across the files. It adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration; inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts, so listen to joins and inspect FFmpeg’s logs. A duration directive can override stored duration metadata. A common command shape loops and paces the playlist input like this:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i "C:sleep-streamplaylist.txt" -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"This combines the documented input-loop and concat options, but validate it with your installed FFmpeg version and playlist before using it live. -safe 0 relaxes concat path safety checks; use it only with a playlist you control. A single-file loop is simpler to troubleshoot. A playlist offers variety and makes it easier to reorder or replace tracks, but adds compatibility and transition checks.

What 24/7 operation requires on Windows
The FFmpeg loop only governs media playback. Continuous operation also depends on Windows staying awake, the process continuing to run, internet upload remaining available, and the destination accepting the stream. These requirements are separate; -re does not prevent computer sleep, restart FFmpeg after a failure, restore a dropped connection, or guarantee uptime.
- Check Windows power and sleep behavior for your specific release and device; the exact settings are not established here.
- Plan how FFmpeg will run after sign-in or restart and how you will notice a stopped process. The FFmpeg background option below does not supervise or restart it.
- Check that your Indian ISP connection and data plan can sustain the selected outgoing bitrate, and consider what happens during a router, power, or internet outage. No single upload-speed or data-cost figure applies to every location or provider.
- Monitor the platform’s stream health and your FFmpeg output. Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended.
Run FFmpeg without waiting for console input
For a background task, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin so FFmpeg does not check console input. On Windows, the documented alternative is redirecting standard input from NUL. For example, add -nostdin to the command options. This only addresses console input; it does not keep the computer awake or recover a failed process. Rights, archives, and live-stream restrictions
Use sleep audio and any visuals only when you have the necessary rights or permission. YouTube says live streams may be terminated or affected by copyright restrictions, including a live copyright strike; Content ID claims may also be made after a live stream if it is archived. These platform rules do not determine whether a particular recording is licensed or settle Indian copyright questions. Review YouTube’s live-stream restrictions and its copyright guidance.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be saved as a single complete archive; plan separately if you need recordings of the broadcast.

Troubleshooting common failures
- FFmpeg says it cannot open the input: Check the path, filename, permissions, and quotation marks. For a playlist, check that the text file uses compatible encoding and that each listed path resolves.
- The file plays through once and stops: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-i. It is an input option and must apply to the file or playlist being looped. - The platform receives data too quickly or playback is not paced: For file-based live output, verify
-reis included before the relevant input. It cannot fix a weak connection or platform disconnect. - YouTube shows no preview or rejects the stream: Check the ingest URL, key, protocol, chosen codecs, output format, and whether the setup expects a video feed. Review YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than relying on the illustrative command.
- The stream health indicator reports instability: Check the actual outgoing bitrate against sustained upload capacity, run a speed test, and follow YouTube’s stream-health messages. A higher resolution or bitrate is not useful if the connection cannot maintain it.
- There are gaps, clicks, or abrupt changes between playlist tracks: Confirm that files have compatible streams and inspect their duration metadata. Listen to each join; try a
durationdirective only when you know the accurate duration. - The stream stops when the PC sleeps or loses internet: This is outside FFmpeg’s loop options. Review power behavior, connection continuity, and how you will restart and monitor the process for your Windows setup.
- YouTube reports a rights issue: Stop or replace material you cannot use and resolve the issue through YouTube’s process. A loop command does not grant rights to audio or visuals.
