Create a YouTube playlist to give viewers one place to find your scheduled livestream, available archives, highlights, and suitable fallback videos. But a playlist is not a backup broadcast: it does not keep a stream online or automatically switch viewers to another stream after an encoder or network failure. Plan viewer navigation, stream continuity, and recording backups separately.
What a backup playlist can—and cannot—do
A playlist organizes videos and watch pages so viewers can find related content in one place. It can help direct people to your live stream and its supporting videos, but YouTube’s playlist guidance does not describe playlists as an outage redirect or automatic failover system. For continuity, you need a separately configured and tested backup encoder or another streaming arrangement.
Keep these three goals distinct: help viewers find the right destination, keep the live broadcast running if an encoder fails, and preserve a recording if the live archive is incomplete. YouTube’s guidance on playlists, encoder failover, and archives addresses different parts of that plan.
How to create and use the playlist

Schedule the stream and save its watch-page link
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a stream or reuse its settings. Keep the scheduled watch-page URL for promotion and add it to the playlist when it is available to select. For encoder streaming, enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube in your encoder. Create a clearly named playlist
On desktop, open an existing video’s watch page, select More → Save → Create new playlist, enter a name that explains its purpose—such as “Live now and backup videos”—and choose the visibility you want. YouTube says a private playlist is visible only to its owner. Follow YouTube’s playlist instructions if the labels or layout have changed.

Add the live destination and useful videos
Add the scheduled or live watch page when it can be selected, along with published livestream archives, highlights, and any evergreen video that genuinely helps viewers if the live broadcast is unavailable. A fallback video is a viewing alternative, not a replacement live stream.

Share the playlist where viewers look for updates
Place the playlist link in relevant channel information, a pinned post, stream descriptions, or established viewer instructions. YouTube recommends sharing a stream link in advance; the playlist can make related destinations easier to find, but it does not reroute the live player during an outage. See Promote your live stream.

Review it after each event
Check that the current watch page, archive, and fallback items are present and available. Remove stale or unavailable entries that could send viewers to the wrong place. YouTube also recommends organizing livestream archives and highlight clips into playlists.

Configure and test actual stream failover separately
A playlist cannot take over from a failed encoder. If your setup uses a backup encoder, configure that arrangement in your streaming workflow and test it before relying on it. YouTube’s live-streaming tips specifically say to test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then check that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- Start the primary and backup arrangement according to your encoder setup.
- Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable to simulate the failure you want to test.
- Watch the viewer-facing player and confirm it actually rolls over to the backup encoder.
- Check stream audio and video, and confirm the local archive file remains intact and continues to grow.
A successful test demonstrates the failover you tested; it does not establish protection against every possible problem. YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation through power failure, internet-provider failure, a YouTube outage, or all other failure modes. Keep a separate recording for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Because a continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the entire broadcast. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; check that the recording is being written and remains usable. The required storage depends on your resolution, codec, bitrate, and retention period, so there is no single safe capacity to assume.

Protect the stream key and keep the playlist current
YouTube describes stream keys as acting like the stream’s password and address. Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. The playlist link is for viewers, while the stream key is a credential for connecting an encoder—do not publish the key in playlist descriptions or viewer instructions. YouTube notes that public playlist creation has a daily limit across YouTube surfaces and the API. That is unlikely to affect someone making one backup playlist, but may matter if you automate or bulk-create playlists. Check YouTube’s playlist help for current details.
