For long recordings in OBS, record to MKV rather than ordinary MP4, then use OBS’s built-in remux tool to create an MP4 if you need one. MKV is the safer choice when a recording might be interrupted. If you already have an MP4, load it into a scene as a Media Source; remuxing changes a container, but it is not a guaranteed repair for damaged files or unsupported codecs.
Choose a recording format that can survive an interruption
Ordinary MP4 needs finalization when recording ends. If OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly, the file may not be recoverable. OBS recommends MKV for most recording workflows because an unfinished recording remains playable and recoverable. MKV also supports every audio and video encoder combination available in OBS, although some editing applications offer weaker MKV support. See the OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide and Standard Recording Output Guide.
| Format | Interruption recovery | Compatibility and trade-off | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS describes an unfinished recording as playable and recoverable. | Supports all audio and video encoder combinations available in OBS; some editing software supports it less well. | Best default for a long recording when protecting the file matters. Remux afterward if an MP4 is required. |
| Ordinary MP4 | Requires finalization and may be unrecoverable if recording is interrupted. | Broad compatibility with internet video players and editing software. | Use as a direct recording target only when interruption risk is not a concern. |
| Hybrid MP4 | Writes fragmented data, then performs a soft-remux when recording finishes normally. | Designed for MP4 compatibility, but only certain audio and video codec combinations are supported. | Consider when direct MP4 output matters and your OBS version and codecs are supported. |
| Fragmented MP4/MOV | Written in self-contained chunks and does not require finalization to be usable. | Generally good editing support; some suites may require remuxing for lossless or uncompressed audio. | Possible alternative when your editing workflow supports it. |
Record in MKV, then make an MP4 in OBS
- Open Settings → Output. Set the recording path to the folder and drive where you want OBS to save recordings, then choose MKV as the recording format.
- Record and stop normally when possible. MKV is the safer choice if a crash or shutdown interrupts the session.
- To create an MP4 afterward, open File → Remux Recordings, select the recording, and run Remux. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the audio and video streams.
- To have OBS do this automatically when a recording stops, enable Automatically remux to mp4 in the Advanced recording settings.
OBS documents this workflow, but does not promise that remuxing repairs damaged media or makes incompatible codecs play. If the resulting MP4 still fails in your target editor or player, check that application’s supported codecs as well as the file’s condition.
Consider Hybrid MP4 only after checking version and codecs
OBS introduced Hybrid MP4 in OBS 30.2. It writes fragmented data for resilience and performs a soft-remux on normal completion. Unlike MKV, it does not support every possible OBS audio and video encoder combination, so check the supported codec matrix in the OBS Project’s Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats guide before choosing it. The same guide says Hybrid MOV followed in OBS 32.0; that is a separate format, not a reason to assume every version or codec combination behaves alike.

Play an existing MP4 in an OBS scene
- In the scene where the video should appear, add a Media Source and select the local MP4 file.
- If playback is choppy, you can check Use hardware decoding when available. This option depends on support for both the file type and your GPU; it is not a guaranteed fix for stuttering or other playback problems.
- If the built-in Media Source does not support the file’s format, OBS also offers a VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide lists MP4 as a supported Media Source video type. Remuxing is not necessary simply because a file is long; it is mainly useful when converting a recording container or addressing a compatibility need.
Plan storage for the recording path
The recording path in Settings → Output determines where OBS saves files. If a long recording could fill that drive, choosing a location with enough free capacity—including an external drive if appropriate—addresses storage capacity only. More storage does not fix a file that was not finalized, a codec the player cannot decode, or damaged media.

Troubleshoot by separating the failure type
- The recording is missing or unplayable after OBS or the computer stopped: Ordinary MP4 may not have been finalized. For future long sessions, record to MKV and remux to MP4 after recording.
- The MKV plays, but an editor will not accept it: Use OBS’s File → Remux Recordings workflow to create MP4 without re-encoding. Confirm that the editor supports the codecs inside the file.
- The MP4 does not play after remuxing: Remuxing does not guarantee repair or codec conversion. Check the target application’s format and codec support; the OBS guidance does not establish a universal repair procedure.
- The Media Source stutters: Check whether hardware decoding is available for the file and GPU. The setting may be worth trying but is not a guaranteed solution.
- The source format is unsupported by Media Source: Try VLC Video only if VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC).
- The recording stops because the drive runs out of space: Change the recording path to a location with adequate available capacity. This is distinct from container finalization and playback compatibility.
OBS’s cited documentation does not establish universal fixes for audio/video sync drift, variable frame rate, corrupt indexes, storage throughput problems, or very large-file limits. Diagnose those symptoms against the specific file, codecs, hardware, and playback application rather than treating remuxing as a cure-all.
