You can guide Google Discover toward the image you want by making it relevant, crawlable, and clearly identified in page metadata, while allowing a large preview. You cannot force Google to use a particular thumbnail: its image selection is automated.

Choose a representative image that qualifies for Discover

Use an image that clearly represents the page’s subject, rather than a generic site logo or artwork dominated by text. Google recommends an image at least 1,200 pixels wide and larger than 300,000 total pixels, composed for a 16:9 landscape presentation. For example, a 1,280 × 720 image has 921,600 pixels and meets those size recommendations. Google may crop images automatically, so keep the important subject visible in a landscape crop. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that an image will appear in Discover. See Google’s Get on Discover guidance.

Identify the preferred image in page metadata

Google says it uses both the Open Graph og:image tag and schema.org image markup as sources for thumbnail selection in Search and Discover. Use the method your publishing system can maintain accurately. If you provide both, point them to the same image URL and check the rendered page output.

Open Graph metadata

Add the image URL to the page’s <head>:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-hero-1280x720.jpg">

Schema.org markup

For a WebPage, Google documents primaryImageOfPage as an option. Alternatively, identify the image on the page’s main entity, such as a BlogPosting. Here is a minimal page-level example; replace both example URLs with the actual page and image URLs:

Google’s March 2, 2026 documentation update clarified that both schema.org markup and og:image are image-thumbnail sources. Google does not document either format as universally superior. Its selection remains automated; metadata signals preference, not a guaranteed override. See Google Search Central documentation updates and Google image SEO best practices.

Allow a large image preview

If you want Google to be able to show a large image preview, include this robots directive on the page:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
<meta name="robots" content="max-image-preview:large">

The large value permits a larger preview, up to viewport width; standard allows a default preview, while none disallows image previews. This setting controls preview size, not which image Google selects. Google also lists AMP as a route for meeting its Discover image-preview recommendation. Check Google’s robots meta tag specification.

Make sure Google can find and access the image

  • Use a standard HTML <img src="..."> image where appropriate. Google says it can find images in the src attribute; CSS background images are not indexed as images.
  • If you use responsive image markup, provide a crawlable src fallback.
  • Make sure Googlebot can access both the page and image URL; metadata pointing to an inaccessible asset cannot solve an access problem.
  • Consider an image sitemap for image URLs that might otherwise be difficult for Google to discover.

These discovery and access recommendations are covered in Google image SEO best practices.

Verify the page Google receives

  1. Open the rendered, published page and inspect its actual HTML head—not only the CMS field or template.
  2. Confirm og:image and any structured data identify the intended image and use consistent URLs.
  3. Check that the asset is landscape, relevant, sufficiently large, and reachable by Googlebot.
  4. Confirm that the page’s robots metadata does not suppress image previews or limit them below the preview you want.

This review helps catch implementation mistakes, but it cannot guarantee Google will select the preferred image.

If Discover still shows a different image

  • Metadata points to the wrong asset: correct the page-specific og:image or structured data, then verify the rendered output.
  • Open Graph and schema.org disagree: make them consistent around one representative image.
  • The image is a poor fit or crop: use a page-specific image and check that its main subject survives a 16:9 landscape crop.
  • The preview is small or absent: inspect the page’s max-image-preview setting and ensure it permits the preview you want.
  • The asset cannot be discovered or fetched: use crawlable image markup, verify Googlebot access, and consider an image sitemap.

Even when these checks pass, Google may choose another image because thumbnail selection is automated and the documented signals do not guarantee a particular result.

For developers who also need to capture a page image, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It does not change Google Discover’s image selection or replace the metadata and crawlability checks above. A single GET request can capture a URL; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Should I use og:image or schema.org markup?

Does max-image-preview:large choose the thumbnail?

No. It permits a larger preview; it is separate from the image-selection signals.
