A visual-change alert is different: it reports a difference between successful captures and may not notify you when a capture never completes.
Set up an email alert for failed screenshot runs
- Choose a scheduler that documents failure alerts. Do not assume that general “monitoring” or email-notification support includes failed-run alerts.
- Create a schedule. Add the page you want to monitor, then choose a capture cadence and rendering options that suit it.
- Set the email destination. In the scheduler’s delivery or notifications settings, enter the recipient address. - Enable the failed-run alert separately. Allscreenshots’ API example uses
alertOnFailure: true. Its sample also setsautoPauseAfterFailuresto5; five is the example value, not a universal default. - Check a run and its history. Trigger a run if the service offers that option, then inspect the schedule history for its status and any available capture details. This helps confirm that the schedule is active and that a failure notification corresponds to the run record.
- Choose how repeated failures should be handled. Decide whether a schedule should keep trying, pause after a streak, or use another repeat policy. A pause can prevent continued attempts, but it can also stop monitoring until someone intervenes.
Make sure you are alerting on the right event
A change alert means two successful captures differ. A failure alert means a scheduled capture did not complete. Since a failed capture may provide no usable image for comparison, enabling only change notifications does not cover the failure case. Allscreenshots documents alertOnFailure separately from onlyOnChange; Site-Shot likewise distinguishes schedule health from change detection (Site-Shot scheduled screenshots).
Check delivery, thresholds, and run history
Delivery route
Use direct email if the alert should go to an inbox. A webhook is useful when you want to route an event through a system you control; Allscreenshots documents webhook delivery as well as email. Site-Shot says its alerts go to the account email. These routes and options vary by provider.
Thresholds and repeat behavior
More tolerance before alerting can reduce noise but delay awareness. Repeated alerts can also fill an inbox, while automatic pausing can leave a schedule stopped. The policies below are provider-specific examples, not industry-wide defaults:

- Site-Shot says it emails and pauses a schedule after fourteen failed windows in a row.
- Calibre documents a maximum of three consecutive emails for the same snapshot failure, followed by a confirmation email after recovery. Its failure email identifies affected pages, test profiles, and the reason where available. See Calibre email notification documentation.
History and diagnosis
An email tells you an event occurred; the run history is where to check its status and investigate the cause. Allscreenshots documents schedule history with run status and capture details. Calibre’s documented snapshot-failure email includes affected pages, profiles, and a reason. The detail available depends on the service.
Reduce missed alerts and unnecessary noise
- Verify that the recipient address is correct and can receive messages from the service; check spam or filtering rules if expected messages do not arrive.
- Confirm that the schedule is enabled and that the failure-alert setting is distinct from any change-only option.
- Review the cadence against the time you can tolerate before learning of a problem. More frequent scheduled captures can detect an issue sooner and consume more screenshot quota; Allscreenshots says schedules are metered against its monthly screenshot quota, with cadence options depending on its settings and plan.
- Inspect the failure threshold and pause behavior. A long threshold can postpone email; an automatic pause can halt future monitoring after a streak.
- Use run history to distinguish a failed capture from a successful capture that simply looks different.

Can a change alert notify me when a screenshot capture fails?
Not reliably. A change alert compares successful captures; enable a separate failed-run notification.
