Browshot documents several ways to capture pages that require authentication: reuse a session cookie, submit login data, automate a browser login, or use HTTP Basic authentication where the site supports it. Cookie and POST-data screenshots are marked as paid features, and the dashboard login-automation guide describes availability for premium and private browsers. These methods are documented capabilities—not a guarantee that every site’s sign-in flow will work.
Which Browshot authentication method should you use?

Can I pass a session cookie to Browshot?
Yes. Browshot’s API accepts a cookie parameter for paid screenshots. It applies the cookie to the requested URL; when sending multiple cookie pairs, separate them with semicolons. This is useful when you have already authenticated elsewhere and can provide a valid session cookie for the target site. See the API parameter reference and custom-request examples for parameter details.
Session cookies are sensitive credentials: anyone who can use a still-valid session may be able to access the associated account. Avoid placing them in source control or exposing them in shared logs, and follow the target site’s access rules. A cookie can also expire, be bound to a particular browser or device, or fail to cover a different host or path; if the capture shows a login page, verify the cookie is valid for the requested URL.
Can Browshot log in through a form?
Browshot documents browser automation steps that can type into username and password fields, click a submit control, wait for the page, navigate to a protected URL, and take a screenshot. Its guide says the dashboard exposes these steps under Advanced options for premium and private browsers. The exact selectors and sequence depend on the site’s login page. - In Browshot’s dashboard, open the screenshot configuration and its Advanced options for a premium or private browser.
- Configure browser steps to enter the username and password in the correct fields and click the login control.
- Add a wait appropriate to the site’s response, then navigate to the protected page and capture it.
- Check the resulting screenshot to confirm that the session reached the intended page rather than a login, verification, or error screen.
Some sites require additional JavaScript interactions, a second authentication factor, a CAPTCHA, or a site-specific sequence. Browshot’s documentation describes the mechanism but does not promise that every authentication flow is compatible.
When does POST data make sense?
Browshot documents a paid post_data parameter and gives an example of submitting username and password form data to a login URL. This can fit a simple form endpoint that accepts a direct POST. If login requires browser-side actions or the server responds by redirecting through several pages, use a browser automation sequence or another supported step after the POST rather than assuming the initial submission completes authentication. The custom requests guide also covers POST data and session cookies.

What about HTTP Basic authentication?
For a site protected by HTTP Basic authentication, Browshot’s password-protected-sites guide lists credentials embedded in the URL, in the form http://username:password@domain.com/. Use this only when the target actually uses Basic authentication. Because credentials in URLs may be recorded in logs or request histories, avoid this form when a safer credential mechanism is available and protect any request records that contain it. The guide documents the approach but does not describe credential-handling protections.
What Browshot’s documentation does—and does not—establish
The documentation establishes that Browshot supports these authentication mechanisms. It does not establish that every site, login interface, or additional authentication factor will work. The reviewed guides also do not state current plan prices, so check Browshot’s current account and pricing information before choosing a plan; the relevant pages identify cookie and POST screenshots as paid and dashboard automation as available for premium and private browsers.
