You do not need to save a screenshot file. The key is to distinguish raw Base64 from an inline image that a browser tool displays: they are different output formats.
Capture a screenshot and return it as Base64
The workflow is: navigate to the page, wait until the content you need is ready, capture the screenshot as bytes, encode those bytes, then return the encoded string through your agent’s tool or function response.
JavaScript with Playwright
This example assumes your agent runtime provides a Playwright page object that has already been navigated to the target URL. It captures the visible viewport and returns a named result field:

Python with Playwright
In Python, encode the screenshot bytes with the standard library’s base64 module. This assumes an async Playwright page is available:

Pick the capture scope that matches what the agent was asked to return:

page.screenshot(). - Full page: the entire scrollable document, captured as a tall image. Set
fullPage: truein JavaScript or the equivalent option for your Playwright language. - Element: a specific component, such as a chart or form. Locate the element and call its screenshot method, for example
await page.locator('#chart').screenshot().
The Playwright guide covers viewport, full-page, and element screenshots. A focused element capture can avoid returning unrelated page content; a full-page capture includes content outside the current viewport.
Wait for the right content before capturing
There is no single wait condition that is correct for every website. Navigate using your runtime’s normal Playwright method, then wait for the content relevant to the request. For a page with a particular heading or component, waiting for that locator to appear is often more targeted than waiting for every network request to stop. Pages with live updates, analytics, or long-running requests may never reach a useful network-idle state.
- Navigate to the requested URL using the browser page supplied to the agent.
- Wait for the page state or specific element needed in the image.
- Take the viewport, full-page, or element screenshot.
- Encode the screenshot bytes and return them in the framework’s required result shape.
The Playwright sources document capture options, but they do not prescribe a universal page-readiness strategy. Use the agent framework and site behavior to decide what “ready” means for the requested screenshot.

Return raw Base64 or a data URL?
Follow the receiving tool’s schema. A result such as { image_base64: "..." } contains plain Base64. Some consumers instead expect a data URL, which adds a media-type prefix, such as data:image/png;base64,, before the encoded content. Add that prefix only when the receiver asks for a data URL and use the media type matching the screenshot format. The Playwright documentation shows how to encode image bytes; it does not establish a universal agent response format.
Do not assume that an image shown inline by a browser tool is already available as a raw Base64 string. Check the tool’s documented response contract. If it provides image content but not bytes or Base64, use a wrapper or capture path that exposes the bytes before encoding them.

Playwright supports image type and scale options in its screenshot API. PNG is a practical choice when fidelity matters; JPEG or WebP may better suit a downstream system that accepts those formats and benefits from smaller image data. The encoded Base64 representation is larger than the original binary image, so consider the receiving tool’s payload limits before returning a large full-page image. The cited Playwright documentation lists format and scale options but does not establish benchmark results for a particular site or receiver.

For example, request WebP bytes in JavaScript and encode them in the same way:

Troubleshoot common failures
- The result contains an inline image, not a Base64 field: the screenshot tool may return displayable image content rather than raw encoded text. Inspect its output contract and use a wrapper that receives bytes and returns an explicitly named Base64 field.
- The receiving system rejects the value: verify whether it expects plain Base64, a data URL, or a different object shape. Confirm the field name and any payload-size limit in that system’s schema.
- The screenshot is blank or missing a component: capture only after the necessary content has rendered. Wait for the relevant locator or application state rather than assuming navigation completion means all content is ready.
- The image is unexpectedly large: check whether you requested full-page capture and whether the selected scale is appropriate. A viewport or element screenshot may be sufficient for the task.
- The media type does not match the data: ensure the requested screenshot format and any data-URL prefix agree. For example, do not label WebP bytes as PNG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does returning a screenshot as Base64 require saving a file?
No. Playwright can return screenshot bytes in memory; encode those bytes directly.
Does Playwright MCP always return a raw Base64 string?
Its documented screenshot tool can return image content inline, but that does not by itself establish a raw Base64 response. Check the tool’s output contract.
