To capture a menu, tooltip, or preview that appears on hover, have your browser automation move the pointer onto its trigger, wait until the revealed content is visible, and then take a screenshot. In Playwright, use a locator’s hover() method; in Selenium, use Actions.moveToElement(). An AI agent can run either sequence, but the page must actually enter the hover state before capture.
Capture hover content in the right order
- Find the trigger. Identify the link, button, image, or other element that reveals the desired content. Prefer a stable locator, such as an accessible role and name, when the page provides one.
- Move the pointer to it. Use the browser automation framework’s real pointer-hover action. Merely locating the element or asking the agent to describe it does not reveal hover-only content.
- Wait for the revealed state. Wait for a tooltip, menu, or other visible element that proves the interaction has appeared. If the site reveals content after animation or a network request, waiting for that state is more reliable than choosing an arbitrary delay. There is no universal wait duration.
- Capture the appropriate area. A page screenshot includes the viewport, while an element screenshot clips to the matched element. If a menu or tooltip is positioned outside the trigger’s bounds, capture the page rather than the trigger.
- Verify the image. Save or return the screenshot bytes, then check that the intended hover content appears in the captured image.
Playwright: hover with a locator, then capture
Playwright recommends locator-based hover(); its documentation marks the older page-level method as discouraged. Locator hover scrolls an element into view when needed, performs actionability checks, and moves the pointer to the element’s center by default.
const trigger = page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Products' });
await trigger.hover();
await page.getByRole('menu').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'hover-state.png' });
Replace the role, accessible name, and visible-state locator with those for the page you are automating. A tooltip may be exposed with a tooltip role rather than a menu; some sites use a different element or interaction entirely. The example illustrates the documented actions, but has not been validated against a particular website.
Choose page or element capture deliberately
page.screenshot() captures the viewport by default. Playwright also supports full-page capture and locator screenshots. Use a locator screenshot only when the hover content lies inside that locator’s bounds; a page screenshot is safer when the revealed panel is positioned elsewhere.

Selenium: move the pointer, wait, and capture
Selenium’s Actions.moveToElement() moves the pointer to the element’s in-view center, the point Selenium describes as hovering. The target needs to be in the viewport for this operation.
WebElement trigger = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(".menu-trigger"));
new Actions(driver).moveToElement(trigger).perform();
// Wait until the site's hover content is visible.
new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10))
.until(ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(By.cssSelector(".menu")));
File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Adjust the selector and wait condition to match the page. The timeout shown is an example for configuring a wait, not a universal timing recommendation. WebDriver’s screenshot interface captures after the hover action; the exact locator and condition depend on the target site.

Give an AI agent an observable task
For an agent-driven workflow, specify the trigger, the state that must become visible, and the required screenshot scope. For example: “Hover the Products link, wait until the menu is visible, capture the viewport, and confirm the menu appears in the image.” This makes the task verifiable instead of treating a screenshot command as proof that the hover worked.
- Use an accessible name or stable selector for the trigger rather than a fragile screen coordinate where possible.
- Wait on the revealed element’s visible state, not only on elapsed time.
- Capture the page if the panel may render outside the trigger, including in a separate overlay or portal.
- Inspect the resulting image. A completed automation call does not itself establish that a particular website rendered the expected content.
Choose the automation approach that fits your setup
| Approach | Hover and capture | Useful when | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Locator hover(), then page or locator screenshot |
Your project already uses Playwright and you want locator-based interaction. | Use a page screenshot if revealed content may fall outside the trigger’s bounds. |
| Selenium | Actions API moveToElement(), then WebDriver screenshot |
Your project already uses Selenium or depends on its ecosystem. | The documented hover operation requires the target to be in the viewport. |
| BrowserStack Automate | Run Selenium tests on hosted browser/device infrastructure; use dashboard Visual Logs or request screenshots in test code. | You need hosted execution or browser/device coverage. | To download screenshots locally, BrowserStack says to take them explicitly from the test script. |
Choose based on the automation stack already in use, locator stability, how the target enters the viewport, and whether you need a viewport, full-page, or element image. Hosted execution is optional; the workflow can be implemented with browser automation APIs.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call endpoint captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This URL capture call does not perform a pointer hover, so it is not a substitute when the requested content only appears after an interaction. For hover-specific capture, use Playwright or Selenium above.
For ordinary URL captures, the API removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

Troubleshooting hover screenshots
- The menu or tooltip is missing. Confirm the locator matched the actual trigger, then wait for the revealed element to become visible before capture. The page may reveal the content only after a different pointer action.
- The hover action fails because the target is off-screen. Scroll it into view before Selenium’s
moveToElement(); Playwright locator hover scrolls into view when needed. - The screenshot cuts off the menu. Check the capture bounds. A trigger-only locator screenshot may omit a panel rendered outside the trigger; use a page screenshot instead.
- The capture happens before an animation or request finishes. Wait for a visible or otherwise observable completion state. Avoid assuming one fixed sleep works across sites.
- The screenshot file exists but looks wrong. Inspect the image and confirm the hover content is actually present. Saving a screenshot proves capture ran, not that the desired UI state was visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI agent need a physical mouse to capture hover content?
No specific physical mouse or accessory is established as necessary; the documented workflows use browser automation pointer actions.
