If the agent needs to navigate, accept a consent dialog, log in, fill out a form, or wait for page content before capturing, use an interactive remote-browser session. MCP is a convenient way to give a compatible AI client browser tools; Playwright and Puppeteer are code-first options.
Choose a direct capture or an interactive browser session
The right method depends on whether the browser must do anything before taking the picture. A direct screenshot endpoint is simpler when you know the URL and capture settings. A browser session is useful when the page must reach a particular state first. Browserless makes this distinction in its screenshot documentation, advising a browser connection when interaction or waiting for dynamic content is needed.
| Need | Approach |
|---|---|
| Capture a known URL with no interaction | Call a screenshot REST endpoint. |
| Let an MCP-compatible assistant capture a page | Use an MCP screenshot tool, such as the one documented by Browserless. |
| Navigate or interact before capturing | Connect Playwright or Puppeteer to a remote browser, or use an agent browser session. |
For a simple page, a single-page scraper or endpoint avoids the extra setup of an interactive session. For login, forms, pagination, menus, or consent dialogs, the agent needs a stateful workflow: observe the page, act, observe the changed page, then capture.
Use an MCP screenshot tool from an AI client
If your assistant supports MCP, configure the remote-browser provider’s MCP server and provide its API token through the client’s secure configuration. Browserless documents an MCP workflow in which the assistant invokes browserless_smartscraper for a full-page capture and saves the returned result as an image. Follow the provider’s current MCP setup instructions for your specific client; a real token should not be placed in a prompt or shared transcript.

For a task requiring interaction, the agent should repeat an observe–act–observe cycle rather than assume the first page state is final. Browserless describes a workflow that navigates with goto, captures a structured snapshot, plans an action, performs a click, typing, selection, or scroll using references from that snapshot, and captures a fresh snapshot after the page changes. Its documentation says sessions are one-shot by default, with an option to retain a session across tool calls.
Use the screenshot after the interaction to verify visual appearance. Use structured or accessibility snapshots to identify controls and obtain reliable references for actions; an image alone is a poor substitute for a fresh page snapshot after the layout or content changes.
Capture a URL with a remote screenshot endpoint
For a one-off screenshot, Browserless documents a POST request to its /screenshot endpoint with a JSON body containing the target url and capture options. Its example uses fullPage: true and type: "png", then writes the raw PNG response bytes to a file. Use your own valid account token in place of the documentation’s example credential.
curl -X POST "https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_BROWSERLESS_TOKEN"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"url":"https://example.com","options":{"fullPage":true,"type":"png"}}'
--output screenshot.png
Endpoint hostnames and authentication details can depend on the provider and account, so use the endpoint shown in your provider’s current documentation. Browserless’s screenshot documentation also provides examples for JavaScript, Python, Java, and C#.

Connect Playwright or Puppeteer for a stateful capture
Use a remote browser connection when code or an agent must load the page, wait, interact, and then capture. Browserless documents both Puppeteer and Playwright connections over a WebSocket. The following Node.js example shows the Puppeteer flow; set the WebSocket endpoint and token from your own Browserless account.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer-core');
async function capture() {
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: 'wss://YOUR_BROWSERLESS_ENDPOINT?token=YOUR_BROWSERLESS_TOKEN'
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
capture().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
For Playwright, the corresponding pattern is chromium.connect, page.goto, and page.screenshot. Browserless’s examples use networkidle for Playwright and networkidle2 for Puppeteer, then close the browser in a finally block to release the remote session. These wait conditions are examples, not guarantees: some sites keep network requests active or render content after a nominal load event.
For pages with interaction, insert the necessary actions between navigation and capture. After a click, form submission, or other state-changing action, wait for the specific expected result and inspect a fresh structured snapshot before acting again. Avoid relying on stale element references from the previous page state.
Choose the screenshot scope and format
- Viewport: captures what is visible in the browser window; use it to inspect an above-the-fold state.
- Full page: captures the page’s scrollable content; useful for a long article or documentation page. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or a tool that loads lazy images before capture.
- Element or region: captures a chosen selector or clipped region, useful for a component, chart, or specific panel. Browserless’s agent screenshot action treats full-page, selector, and clip options as mutually exclusive.
Playwright’s CLI documents viewport, element, full-page, format, and high-resolution captures. It supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP; PNG is the default when the filename does not imply another format. Browserless documents PNG and JPEG for its screenshot endpoint, and selector or clip options for its agent screenshot action. Check the specific tool’s supported options before assuming formats or capture modes carry over between APIs.

Use screenshots for visuals and snapshots for interaction
A screenshot is best for checking visual layout, canvas or chart content, or documenting a visual bug. It does not provide dependable element references for clicking or reading page structure. Playwright’s documentation distinguishes screenshots, which are for looking, from browser snapshots, which provide references for interaction.
A practical agent workflow combines both: obtain a structured or accessibility snapshot to understand the controls, interact using its references, take a fresh snapshot after each meaningful state change, and capture an image when you need to verify the rendered result.
Protect credentials, page data, and remote sessions
- Keep tokens out of code committed to source control. Load credentials from protected runtime configuration or a secret store. Do not paste real tokens into prompts, transcripts, screenshots, or application logs.
- Treat screenshots as sensitive data. They may show account details or other private page content. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation advises showing screenshots only to authorized users and keeping them out of application logs: computer-use documentation.
- Close connected sessions. Use a
finallyblock so the browser is closed even if navigation or capture fails; this releases the remote session. - Choose a page-specific wait. A generic network-idle condition can be unsuitable for pages with ongoing network activity or delayed rendering. Prefer waiting for a known selector or visible state when the workflow depends on it.
Troubleshoot common remote screenshot failures
The request returns an error instead of an image
Check that the URL is valid, the request body is valid JSON, the endpoint matches your account, and the token is valid and supplied in the required place. A documentation token is an example, not a usable credential. Keep authentication out of shared logs while inspecting request status and provider error details.
The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content
The page may need more time or a specific interaction before it renders the relevant content. A direct endpoint cannot perform an unprovided sequence of actions. Use a connected browser or agent session, wait for the expected selector or state, and then capture. Do not assume that networkidle means every visual element has finished rendering.

The screenshot shows only the visible browser area
Set the tool’s full-page option if you need the entire scrollable document. If the page loads images as you scroll, use a capture method that loads lazy content or scroll through the page before taking the final screenshot.
An agent clicks the wrong control or cannot find an element
Take a new structured or accessibility snapshot after navigation and after actions that change the page. Use references from the current snapshot rather than an old screenshot or stale selector. A screenshot helps confirm appearance, but it does not replace the structured references needed for interaction.
The session remains open after an error
Ensure browser cleanup runs in a finally block. The remote-browser examples use this pattern so errors during navigation or capture do not skip session closure.
Or skip the browser setup
If the URL is known and you do not need to drive a browser through a sequence of actions, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API, plus an MCP server for AI agents. Its cleanup accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; individual steps can be turned off. Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent take a screenshot without controlling a browser?
Yes. For a known URL and capture settings, it can call a screenshot endpoint directly; it needs a browser session when it must interact with the page first.
Should an agent use a screenshot or an accessibility snapshot to find controls?
Use a structured or accessibility snapshot for page structure and interaction references, then use a screenshot to inspect the visual result.
