To capture a webpage with an extension active, the extension must be loaded in the same browser context the AI agent controls. For a repeatable workflow, use Playwright with its bundled Chromium, launch a persistent context with the extension, navigate to the page, then take a screenshot. If the extension is active only in your existing browser profile, use an agent product that lets you share that page instead; an isolated agent session does not automatically inherit your cookies or extension state.
Choose the right browser session
There are two practical routes, and the right one depends on where the extension and any sign-in state live.
| Approach | Use it when | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated Playwright browser | You need a reproducible script, such as a local workflow or CI job, and can load the extension into an automation context. | Playwright’s extension workflow uses Chromium and a persistent context. Its guide recommends bundled Chromium; Chrome and Edge removed the command-line flags this sideload method depends on. Playwright extension guide |
| User-shared browser page | The extension or authentication state exists in your current browser profile and the agent product supports sharing an existing page. | Sharing can provide the existing tab’s cookies and storage, but support for extensions depends on the agent’s browser integration. VS Code browser tools |
VS Code documents both isolated agent-opened pages and user-shared pages; the former do not share cookies or storage with other tabs. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation describes a separate isolated browser session controlled through CDP, but does not say that a user’s installed extensions are automatically present. Load an extension in Playwright and capture a page
Install Playwright and ensure the extension is available as an unpacked directory compatible with Chromium. The example below uses a persistent profile directory, loads the extension, opens the target page and saves a full-page PNG. It is an adaptation of Playwright’s documented launch pattern, not a claim that a particular extension has been verified.

-
Install Playwright in your project:
npm install playwright. Ensure the Playwright-managed Chromium browser is installed for your environment. -
Save the script below as
screenshot.js. Change./my-extensionto the unpacked extension directory and the URL to the page you need. -
Run
node screenshot.js. Check the output file and confirm that the extension’s expected effect is visible; loading a browser is not proof that the extension worked on the page.Rank #2

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const path = require('path');
(async () => {
const extensionPath = path.resolve('./my-extension');
const context = await chromium.launchPersistentContext('./browser-profile', {
channel: 'chromium',
args: [
`--disable-extensions-except=${extensionPath}`,
`--load-extension=${extensionPath}`,
],
});
try {
const page = context.pages()[0] ?? await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'webpage.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await context.close();
}
})();
A persistent context uses a browser profile directory, so treat ./browser-profile as stateful data: it may retain browser state between runs. Use a suitable profile directory for your environment and avoid sharing profile data that contains private information.

Verify the extension before capture
For a Manifest V3 extension, Playwright’s guide shows waiting for its service worker when a test needs to inspect or interact with it. A service worker can be suspended after roughly 30 seconds of inactivity and restarted on demand, so do not treat a one-time worker check as proof of continuous activity. Confirm the extension’s intended visible behavior on the target page.
Extension permissions, host access, settings and the website itself can affect whether an extension changes a page. If the effect is absent, inspect those settings and confirm the extension works in the controlled Chromium context before trusting the screenshot.

Ask the agent for the right capture
Tell the agent whether to launch a fresh automation browser or work with a user-shared page. Then specify the exact URL, the state that matters and the desired screenshot scope. A useful task instruction is:
Use the shared page [or launch the Playwright Chromium context with the extension loaded]. Confirm the extension is active and its expected effect appears on the page. Navigate to [URL], wait until [visible content or state] is present, capture [viewport/full page/element], and report the output filename and any extension or session errors. Do not report a screenshot as complete unless the capture tool saves or returns it.

There is no universal readiness check for every site or extension. Choose a visible condition relevant to the page, such as a heading or a rendered component, rather than assuming that navigation alone means the page is ready.

Playwright can save PNG, JPEG or WebP. CSS scaling produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scaling follows the device pixel ratio and can make the image larger. Choose deliberately when output dimensions or file size matter. Playwright screenshot guide · Playwright MCP
A screenshot is useful for checking visual layout, including canvas or chart output. If the agent needs to read text or understand page structure, an accessibility snapshot may be a better companion than relying on pixels alone. Playwright MCP

If you need the page image but do not need an installed browser extension to alter it, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The extension is missing. The agent may be using an isolated profile, or the extension was not loaded into the controlled context. Use Playwright’s documented Chromium extension setup or share the existing page through a supported agent feature.
- The launch fails or the extension does not load. Confirm you are using Playwright’s Chromium channel and that the extension path points to an unpacked, compatible extension. Do not rely on Chrome or Edge command-line sideload flags for this workflow.
- The extension appears installed but has no effect on the page. Check its permissions, host access and settings, then verify the actual effect on the target site. The toolbar showing an extension does not establish that it can modify every page.
- The screenshot cuts off lower content. Use Playwright’s
fullPage: trueor the agent tool’s full-page option rather than a viewport capture. - The output is unexpectedly large or small. Check CSS-pixel versus device-pixel scaling; device scaling follows the device pixel ratio and can produce more pixels.
- The agent cannot see a logged-in page. Isolated contexts do not inherit the current browser’s sign-in state. Use a product-supported way to share the authenticated page, and verify the agent can access it before capture.
- The agent says it captured an image but no file exists. Require it to report the returned or saved filename and any tool error. Do not treat a planned capture as a completed one.
Reliability, performance and cost considerations
A persistent browser context is the reproducible choice when the extension can be loaded into the automation session; a shared page is more appropriate when the required state is already in the user’s browser. The sources do not establish a universal speed or success rate for either approach. Capture size and work vary with screenshot scope and device scale; full-page and device-pixel images can contain substantially more pixels than a viewport CSS-scale capture. No relevant published usage, speed or success percentage is established by the cited technical documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent automatically use any extension installed in my browser?
No universal compatibility is established. The extension must be available in the browser context the agent controls, or the agent product must support sharing the existing page.
Does taking a screenshot prove the extension worked?
No. Check the extension’s expected visible effect on the target page before accepting the capture.
