For a custom dropdown rendered in the webpage, have the agent click its trigger, wait until the menu is visible, then take the screenshot before selecting an option. With Playwright, use page.screenshot() to include the surrounding page or locator.screenshot() to crop to the menu. A native HTML <select> is different: Playwright can select a value, but its documented selectOption() API does not promise to show the operating system’s expanded popup in an image.
Open a custom dropdown, then capture it
A custom dropdown is part of the webpage, so an automation agent can open it like a user and capture its rendered open state. Use a stable accessible role and name where possible; replace the example labels below with those used by the target page.
- Navigate to the page and locate the dropdown trigger.
- Click the trigger to open the menu.
- Wait for the menu or a representative option to become visible.
- Take the screenshot before clicking an option, which would change or close the open state.

If it uses different roles or labels, inspect the page and use the actual accessible name and role. Waiting for visible menu content is more reliable than taking the capture immediately after the click.

Choose page context or a menu crop
Capture the viewport or full page
Use a page screenshot when the menu needs the surrounding interface for context. A viewport capture records the current visible browser area; a full-page screenshot extends the capture to the full scrollable page. For an open overlay, the viewport is often the more useful choice because it preserves the on-screen state without extending the image down the document.

When only the menu is needed, take a locator screenshot. It is cropped to the matching element’s bounds. It will not show parts covered by another element, and for a scrollable element it captures only the portion currently scrolled into view.

A native HTML <select> control is not the same as a custom menu. Playwright’s selectOption() sets a value by option value or label; it is intended to change the form state, not to open and photograph the browser or operating-system popup.

The reviewed Playwright API documentation does not establish that an expanded native popup will appear in a screenshot. If the visible expanded menu itself is essential, target a custom in-page dropdown or deliberately render an equivalent webpage element instead of relying on native popup UI.

Make captures consistent
- Wait for a meaningful state: wait for the menu or an option to be visible rather than inserting an arbitrary delay. This reduces the chance of capturing before the menu opens.
- Keep the menu open: do not select an option until after the screenshot.
- Account for animation: transitions can make captures vary. The locator screenshot API has an animations option; check its behavior against the Playwright version installed in your project.
- Choose the right scope: use a viewport capture for the visible page state and an element screenshot for a focused crop. Check whether overlays obscure the element or whether a scrollable menu shows only part of its contents.
Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete menu
The screenshot was taken before the menu opened
Wait for the actual menu or one of its options to reach the visible state before capturing. Confirm that the locator describes the element the page displays after the click.
The trigger or menu locator does not match
Use the page’s actual accessible role and name. A custom dropdown may expose a listbox, menu, or another role; do not assume every component uses listbox. Replace the illustrative selectors with the semantics and labels used by the target site.

The menu is cut off or covered
A locator screenshot is limited to the matching element’s bounds and cannot reveal portions obscured by another element. Use a page screenshot if surrounding context matters, and check the menu’s scroll position if it is scrollable.
A native select popup is absent
That behavior is not promised by selectOption(). It selects the option and captures the rendered selected value; it does not document a way to hold the native popup open for a screenshot.
