To keep dashboard charts intact in a PDF, wait for the data and charts to finish rendering, choose whether the export should use print styling or match the screen, set a suitable page size and orientation, and inspect the PDF itself for clipped plots, labels, or awkward page breaks. For a dashboard you own, add print-specific CSS and a reliable chart-ready signal; for an occasional export, use the browser’s print preview and adjust the layout before saving.
Why dashboard charts break in PDFs
A dashboard that looks correct on screen may produce a different PDF because browser PDF generation commonly applies print CSS by default. Puppeteer documents that page.pdf() generates a PDF with the print CSS media type, and Playwright documents the same behavior for its PDF API. If you want a print-optimized report, that is useful; if you want a visual snapshot of the screen, explicitly request screen media in your automation. Puppeteer Page.pdf() · Playwright Page.pdf()
Other common causes are charts sized for a different container width, data or fonts that are not ready when capture starts, and page geometry that forces charts or captions to split. A print preview is only a starting point: inspect the exported PDF at its actual page size and zoom.
Export a dashboard manually from your browser
- Wait for the dashboard to settle. Confirm that data has loaded, loading placeholders are gone, and charts are no longer animating. The exact readiness cues depend on the dashboard.
- Open the browser’s print dialog and choose Save as PDF. Check the preview before saving.
- Set page geometry. Try landscape for wide dashboards, select a suitable paper size, and reduce excessive margins if they waste chart width. Use scaling cautiously: shrinking the whole page can make axis labels and legends unreadable.
- Check print-specific options. Review page breaks and whether background graphics are included if chart colors or shading matter. Browser dialog labels and defaults vary.
- Save and inspect the PDF. Check every page for cut-off plot areas, missing labels, illegible text, unexpected splits, and missing backgrounds.
If a chart is still clipped and you do not control the dashboard, try a wider page or landscape layout first. Use a chart-level image or data export only if that dashboard itself provides one; those features are application-specific.

For a dashboard you own: make the PDF layout intentional
Build a print layout rather than shrinking the screen
Use @media print rules to hide navigation and interactive controls that do not belong in documentation, expand the relevant dashboard content, and set deliberate spacing and page sizing. The right goal is a report whose charts and labels remain readable, not simply a smaller version of the application screen. CSS print media is the standard mechanism for print-targeted styling. Size responsive charts for the printed container
Responsive charts often derive their size from their parent container. If print CSS changes that parent’s width or height, the chart may resize or clip differently from its screen version. Chart.js specifically documents responsive sizing in relation to the parent container. Set a print-appropriate container, then verify the actual plot, axes, legend, and labels in the PDF. Wait for application readiness, not just fonts
Before generating the PDF, establish that the dashboard’s data has arrived, charts have rendered, and any transitions or animations have completed or been disabled. Puppeteer waits for fonts by default during PDF generation, but font readiness does not establish that application data or charts are ready. Implement a dashboard-specific readiness condition, such as an application state or DOM marker that becomes available only after the required charts finish rendering. Puppeteer Page.pdf()

Choose print or screen media explicitly
Use print media when you want your print stylesheet to define a document layout. Use screen media when you want the PDF to resemble the on-screen dashboard. Puppeteer and Playwright both provide a media-emulation method to request screen styling before generating the PDF. Puppeteer emulateMediaType() · Playwright emulateMedia()
Automate PDF generation with Puppeteer or Playwright
In either library, the sequence is important: load the page, wait for your application’s chart-ready condition, select the intended media type, and then generate the PDF. These examples assume the dashboard exposes a data-dashboard-ready="true" attribute on the document element only after its content is ready. Replace that condition with one your application actually controls.

- Chart is cut off horizontally: try landscape or a wider paper size, reduce unnecessary margins, and inspect the print container’s computed width. Avoid reducing scale until labels are too small to read.
- Chart or caption splits across pages: apply
break-inside: avoidto the relevant group, then confirm the whole group can fit on one page. - Colors or shaded areas disappear: enable background graphics in the print dialog or background printing in your PDF API, and check that print CSS does not replace those styles.
- Charts are blank or incomplete: wait for application data and chart rendering explicitly; generic navigation or network-idle conditions may not describe the dashboard’s full readiness.
- Labels are tiny: use a more suitable page orientation or split content across pages instead of shrinking an entire wide dashboard.
Chrome DevTools can emulate CSS media features while you debug styling, but the final check should use a PDF generated by the same browser automation or export path used in production. What to validate before using the PDF as documentation
- Every chart has loaded the intended data and its title, axes, legend, and units are visible.
- Text remains readable at normal page viewing or print size.
- Related charts, captions, and notes are grouped as intended across page breaks.
- Background colors and other meaningful visual styling are present.
- The PDF reflects the intended layout: print-optimized or screen-like.
