To have an AI agent screenshot a webpage in Firefox, use an agent browser tool that explicitly supports Firefox, then tell it the URL, whether to capture the viewport, an element, or the full page, and the filename to save. Playwright’s CLI documents Firefox support with playwright-cli open --browser=firefox; its screenshot command can capture the viewport, a target, or the full scrollable page. If you only need a one-off image, Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool is quicker.
Choose the capture method and scope
Pick the workflow based on whether you need an agent to operate the page, a repeatable script, or just a quick manual capture. Decide the capture scope first: a viewport shows only what is currently visible, an element capture isolates a selected part of the page, and a full-page capture includes the scrollable page.
| Method | Best for | Output and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright CLI | Agent-driven Firefox control and repeatable commands | Screenshot command supports viewport, target, and full-page capture. |
| Playwright MCP | An AI agent already connected to an MCP client | browser_take_screenshot supports a target or selector, full-page capture, filename, output type, and scale. |
| Playwright Page API | A custom automation script | Save a screenshot to a file, capture a locator, or use the returned image buffer. |
| Firefox screenshot tool | A single capture without an AI agent or code | Save or copy a visible or full-page screenshot; region and highlighted-element captures are also available. |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Manual captures needing selector, delay, or other controls | Save a screenshot with options including full page, filename, clipboard, and device-pixel ratio. |
A screenshot is for visual inspection. If the agent needs to understand page structure or interact with controls, use an accessibility snapshot as well; Playwright’s documentation recommends that approach for structural understanding and interaction.
Use Playwright CLI to let an agent control Firefox
Playwright’s CLI documents selecting Firefox with --browser=firefox. The command pattern is:

playwright-cli open --browser=firefox https://example.com
Then use the CLI’s screenshot command to save the capture. The screenshot command captures the viewport by default; use its target option for a specific target or --full-page for the full scrollable page. Provide an output filename so the agent can refer to the resulting image. CLI options can change, so check the installed version’s help if an option differs:
playwright-cli screenshot --help
Give the agent an instruction with explicit scope and output, for example: “Open https://example.com in Firefox, capture the full page as example-full.png, and confirm the saved image shows the intended page.” For an element capture, name the element or its CSS selector and ask the agent to verify that the target was found. These prompt suggestions are workflow advice, not a guarantee that a page will load or render identically in every environment.
Use Playwright MCP when the agent has an MCP connection
Playwright MCP exposes the browser_take_screenshot tool to an AI agent. It accepts a target or selector for an element and options for fullPage, filename, output type, and scale. Specify the desired output and scale rather than assuming the default is suitable for your task. For example, ask the agent to open the target URL in Firefox, capture the full page, and save the result to a named file.
MCP is the agent-integration route; it is not the same as a standalone Firefox menu command. Your MCP client and browser setup must provide the Playwright browser tool, and the browser being controlled must be Firefox if Firefox-specific rendering is important. If the task involves reading labels or clicking a control, ask for an accessibility snapshot to locate and interpret it before requesting a screenshot.

Automate a screenshot with Playwright’s Page API
For a code-owned workflow, navigate to the page and call page.screenshot. The following JavaScript pattern saves a viewport screenshot; add fullPage: true for the full scrollable page.
const { firefox } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await firefox.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Use await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true }) in place of the screenshot call when you need the full page. To capture only one element, use a locator screenshot, for example await page.locator('.target').screenshot({ path: 'target.png' }). The selector must match the element you intend to capture. Playwright can also return screenshot bytes instead of writing a file, which is useful when your application needs to process the image in memory.
Take a screenshot manually in Firefox
For a one-time image, Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface avoids setting up an agent or script.
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the visible portion or full page. Firefox also supports selecting a region or an automatically highlighted element.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Use Firefox Developer Tools for configurable manual captures
Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and open Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the full-page screenshot icon when you need the entire document.
Capture one element in Inspector
In Inspector, use Screenshot Node to capture the selected element. This is useful when the target is a specific page node rather than the viewport.

Use the Web Console screenshot helper
Firefox’s Web Console :screenshot helper supports full-page capture, CSS selector targeting, a delay, a filename, clipboard output, and device-pixel-ratio settings. Use a distinct filename for each capture: reusing a filename overwrites the existing screenshot.
Make the screenshot useful to the agent
- Include the complete destination URL, including any path or query parameters required to reach the intended page.
- State whether the desired image is the viewport, one element, or the entire scrollable page.
- Give the output a descriptive filename and specify an image format if your chosen tool exposes that option.
- Ask the agent to confirm it opened the intended page and inspect the saved image. A screenshot alone does not establish that the correct page or state was captured.
- For page understanding or interaction, pair visual inspection with an accessibility snapshot rather than expecting the screenshot to provide semantic structure.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The agent used a different browser
Use a browser tool that explicitly supports Firefox. With the documented Playwright CLI route, select it using --browser=firefox. A screenshot from another browser may not represent Firefox-specific rendering.
The image shows only the top of the page
The default CLI screenshot is the viewport. Request full-page capture with --full-page; for the Page API, set fullPage: true. In Firefox’s manual interface, choose the full-page option rather than the visible portion.
An element screenshot is missing or wrong
Check that the element or CSS selector identifies the intended target on the loaded page. With an agent, ask it to inspect the page structure or take an accessibility snapshot before selecting the target. In Firefox Inspector, select the intended node before using Screenshot Node.

A later capture replaced an earlier one
Use a unique filename for each capture. Firefox’s :screenshot helper overwrites a screenshot when the same filename is reused.
The page is captured before the desired state appears
For manual Firefox Developer Tools capture, the :screenshot helper supports a delay. For an agent workflow, tell the agent what visible state must be present before capture and have it inspect the result. The available sources establish the delay option but do not specify one universal wait time for all sites.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
A local Playwright workflow keeps the capture in your automation environment and gives you programmatic control, but it requires browser setup and a working page load. The Firefox menu is simpler for occasional captures; CLI, MCP, or the Page API is more suitable when the same operation must be repeated or integrated into an agent workflow. The documentation reviewed does not establish universal capture times or reliability rates, so allow for the page’s own load behavior and verify the resulting image instead of assuming a fixed duration.
Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is an API capture route, not a way to control the Firefox installation on your computer. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
