This produces a JPEG file rather than a screenshot that merely appears in the agent’s conversation.
What you need
- An AI client that supports MCP servers, such as one of the clients covered by Playwright’s setup guide.
- Playwright MCP, launched with Node.js tooling through
npx. - The URL of the page to capture. The agent must be able to access it in the browser context.
Playwright MCP exposes browser automation tools to compatible clients. Its core tools include navigation, accessibility snapshots, and screenshot capture. See the official Playwright MCP getting-started guide for current setup details.
Connect Playwright MCP to your AI client
The standard configuration shown in Playwright’s guide is:

The location and activation process vary between clients, so there is no single configuration-file path that applies to all of them. Playwright’s guide includes examples for clients including VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop.

The package reference uses @latest, so setup may change as the package evolves. If the server does not start, check the current Playwright MCP guide and your client’s MCP configuration instructions rather than assuming an older file path or setting.
Navigate to the page and capture a JPEG
- Ask the agent to open the target URL using its Playwright browser-navigation tool.
- Wait for the page to load and for any content you need to appear. If the page relies on delayed or interactive content, tell the agent what it should wait for before taking the screenshot.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith an explicit JPEG type and filename. For example:{ "type": "jpeg", "filename": "capture.jpeg", "fullPage": true } - Use the returned path or image result to locate and inspect the capture.
The screenshot tool documents png, jpeg, and webp as image types. If you omit type, Playwright infers the format from the filename extension; if neither determines it, the documented default is PNG. Setting type: "jpeg" explicitly avoids relying on inference. Check the tool schema exposed by your connected server and client if its parameters differ from this example. Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture

For a long page, full-page capture is useful when the deliverable should show content below the fold. For a component, use a target instead. If the request is only to record what a visitor sees immediately, capture the viewport.
Save the image or return it to the agent
When you supply filename, the tool saves the image to that path. Relative paths resolve from the workspace root. If you omit the filename, the tool saves the screenshot in its output directory and also returns the image inline in the tool response, where the model can inspect it. Choose a filename when another process needs a predictable file; omit it when inline visual inspection is enough.

The screenshot tool also documents a scale choice: css for CSS-pixel sizing or device for device-pixel resolution. Select the scale that matches the downstream need, such as matching page layout dimensions versus retaining device-pixel detail. Consult the current tool reference for the exact parameter shape.
Use snapshots for structure and screenshots for appearance
Playwright MCP accessibility snapshots expose roles, text, and references that help the agent locate controls and interact with the page. Screenshots show the rendered pixels, which are useful for layout, charts, canvas content, and image-heavy regions. For a reliable sequence, have the agent use a snapshot to find or operate the relevant control, then take the JPEG to verify the visual result. Coordinate-based vision tools are an optional capability and require a vision-capable model; they are not required just to navigate and save a screenshot. Avoid making the agent infer every interaction from pixels when the accessibility snapshot provides a structured reference.
Troubleshooting
- The MCP server does not appear in the client: Confirm the JSON entry is in the client’s documented MCP configuration location, then restart or refresh that client. Client-specific setup differs.
- The agent cannot find the screenshot tool: Check that the Playwright MCP server connected successfully and that the client exposes its tools. Verify the current server setup guide.
- The file is PNG instead of JPEG: Set
typetojpegand use a matching filename such ascapture.jpeg. Without an explicit type, output format can depend on the filename extension. - The screenshot cuts off content below the fold: Set
fullPage: true. For a single component, usetargetinstead; the two options cannot be combined. - The capture is not where expected: Check the supplied filename and remember that relative paths resolve against the workspace root. If no filename was supplied, look in the tool’s output directory or inspect the inline image response.
- The page looks incomplete: Ask the agent to wait for the relevant content or page state before capturing. Navigation alone does not establish that a particular delayed element is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a .jpg filename instead of .jpeg?
The documented format name is jpeg. Check the connected tool schema for filename and extension behavior; explicitly setting type: "jpeg" is the clearest way to request JPEG output.
Does the AI client need a vision-capable model to save a JPEG?
No. The optional coordinate-based vision tools require a vision-capable model, but basic navigation and screenshot capture do not require enabling that optional group.
