Use print preview to choose a page size and orientation, then inspect the saved file page by page. If you can edit the HTML, print CSS can hide screen controls and set page dimensions; let the timetable flow naturally, adding page breaks only at useful boundaries such as the start of a new day.
Save an HTML schedule as a PDF in a browser
- Open the schedule in a desktop browser. Wait for the timetable and any fonts or images to finish loading.
- Open the browser’s Print command and choose its PDF destination rather than a physical printer. The exact menu labels vary by browser and operating system.
- Review the print preview. Choose the paper size and orientation. For a timetable with many columns, landscape is a sensible starting point; confirm that the text is still readable.
- If columns are clipped, adjust the scale or margins and check the preview again. If browser-generated headers or footers overlap the schedule or use too much space, turn them off in the print dialog if that option is available.
- Save the PDF, then inspect every page. Check day headings, class names, and times for clipping or awkward splits before sharing or printing it.
Browser printing can send a page to paper or create a PDF, and print CSS can give the document a different presentation from its screen view. See MDN’s guide to printing with CSS. The exact controls and resulting layout are not identical in every browser, so use the preview and saved PDF rather than assuming one universal sequence.
Improve pagination when you can edit the HTML
Add print rules to the page’s existing stylesheet, or link a dedicated stylesheet with media="print". Use @media print to remove controls meant only for the screen and adapt the timetable to the printable width. Use @page to specify page size, orientation, and margins.

}Replace .navigation, .print-button, .schedule, and .day-section with selectors that match your page. The A4 landscape dimensions and 12 mm margins are an example starting point, not a guarantee that every timetable will fit legibly. MDN’s @page reference covers page dimensions, orientation, and margins; its support notes warn that some paged-media details vary across browser versions.

Let the schedule flow, and break at logical boundaries
Ordinary content can continue onto additional pages as space runs out. If a new day or class group should begin on a fresh page, apply break-before: page to that section’s heading or container. To end each section on a new page, break-after: page is another option, as in the example. Avoid forcing a break after every row: that can create unnecessary pages and make the timetable harder to use. Check the result in the target browser’s print preview.
For older-browser compatibility needs, the paged-media guide also discusses the legacy page-break-after declaration alongside modern fragmentation properties. Do not assume that a particular rule will produce identical results across browsers. See MDN’s CSS paged media guide.

Try to keep short rows together
If a short class row splits across pages, try break-inside: avoid on the row or its containing block, then verify the result. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a guarantee: behavior can depend on the browser and on whether the timetable uses a table or another layout.
Choose PDF or paper output
Choose Save as PDF when you need a file to share or archive. Choose a physical printer when you need a handout. In either case, page size, orientation, color, and scale affect whether a wide timetable remains readable. If you print the saved PDF, confirm the printer’s paper size and preview its output as well; creating a PDF does not ensure that it will fit every printer’s settings.

Troubleshoot common print problems
- The rightmost columns disappear: Try landscape orientation, smaller margins, or a modest scale adjustment. Recheck that class names and times remain legible.
- A class row is split: Test
break-inside: avoidon a short row or its container. Preview the result because table layout and browser behavior can affect how the rule is applied. - The PDF has an unexpected blank or extra page: Remove unnecessary forced breaks and review the page dimensions, margins, and existing page-break rules.
- Headers or footers overlap the schedule: Adjust margins or turn off browser-generated headers and footers in the print dialog if the control is available. Chrome’s print documentation explains the dialog setting and notes that Chromium’s default page layout can affect where automatic content appears: Chrome for Developers, “Add content to the margins of web pages when printed using CSS”.
- Colors or backgrounds differ from the screen: Check the print preview and saved PDF. Browser print settings can affect backgrounds, and the relevant controls are not universal.
- The PDF differs from the web page: That can be expected when print CSS changes the layout. Preview in the same browser you use to create the PDF, then inspect the saved file.
