It can be—but there is no universal winner. An already-owned office PC may cost less in cash if it can encode your chosen stream reliably and its measured electricity use, repairs and any incremental internet costs stay below a comparable cloud service bill. Cloud streaming can be a better fit when you value remote operation and less hands-on recovery and monitoring. Compare the same workload over the same 30 days before deciding.

What to compare for a fair 30-day cost

Count more than the PC’s purchase price or a cloud provider’s headline hourly rate. For an always-on stream, compare the same resolution, frame rate, operating hours and storage needs. Include cash expenses and the time and attention needed to keep the stream running.

Cost or effort Old office PC Cloud service
Power or compute Measured PC power at the wall × 720 hours × your local electricity price per kWh, for a 30-day always-on stream. The actual 30-day charge for a service suitable for your encoding workload.
Other charges Repairs or replacement parts, plus any internet cost that is incremental to streaming. If the PC is not truly a sunk cost, include an appropriate share of its purchase price. Storage, egress and any other applicable charges.
Hands-on time Setup, monitoring, restarts and troubleshooting on the local PC and connection. Setup, monitoring and troubleshooting for the selected cloud service; cloud operation does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

StreamNeo’s provider guide recommends comparing electricity, cloud rent and the effort needed to keep a stream going; treat that as provider guidance, not an independent market-price study. Its “under ₹50/day” framing is not an established market price. A precise result depends on your tariff, wall draw, equipment condition, planned stream settings, internet plan and the cloud service’s actual terms.

Measure the PC’s real power use

  1. Run the PC with the encoder and other software you expect to use. Measure input power at the wall under that workload; a plug-in electricity usage monitor is one optional way to do this.
  2. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000.
  3. Multiply kilowatts by 720 hours for a 30-day, 24/7 stream, then by your electricity price per kWh.
  4. Add repairs, replacement parts, incremental internet costs and—if relevant—an appropriate share of the PC’s purchase price.

This is a calculation method, not an assumed Indian tariff or a measured result for any particular PC. If your stream runs fewer than 24 hours a day, use the planned operating hours instead of 720.

Make sure the old PC can handle the stream

Cost only matters if the machine can encode the stream you intend to run. YouTube’s published guidance gives a technical baseline; it does not establish that every old office PC can meet it. Do not assume a minimum CPU or GPU model without evidence about that specific hardware and workload.

Setting YouTube guidance
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
Frame rate and keyframes Up to 60 fps; a two-second keyframe interval is recommended, and it should not exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3.
Example H.264 bitrate recommendations 720p/30 fps: 3 Mbps recommended; 1080p/30 fps: 5 Mbps recommended; 1080p/60 fps: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended.

These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular PC or household internet connection can sustain the selected settings. YouTube advises choosing quality that fits a reliable connection, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. Its testing guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Test the actual workload

  1. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you plan to use.
  2. Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, not just a static screen.
  3. Check encoder load and YouTube stream health during the test, and confirm your connection can sustain the upload bitrate.
  4. Use the intended schedule and operating conditions when estimating power and maintenance effort.

If the PC cannot sustain the chosen stream settings, either reduce the workload and test again or price a cloud option that can handle it. Do not treat an untested old PC or an unspecified cloud VM as a proven equivalent.

What India cloud prices do—and do not—tell you

The IndiaAI Compute Portal lists GPU instances with on-demand and reserved hourly rates. For example, its surfaced AMD MI325X.1X listing is ₹169.2 per hour on demand and ₹85.5 per hour for a 12-month reserved rate. Those are portal-listed rates for that GPU instance, not a quote for a small CPU-only VM or a managed YouTube encoder. They do not establish suitability, reader eligibility, storage, taxes or current access terms. Check the portal’s current terms and calculator before using any listed rate in a comparison.

Compare reliability and workload, not just bills

  • Internet path: A PC depends on the local internet connection and power. A cloud service uses its own connectivity, but the stream still depends on the service and the platform accepting the feed.
  • Recovery: Consider how a restart or dropped connection is detected and handled. Cloud hosting does not automatically mean a stream recovers without intervention; verify the specific service’s behavior.
  • Encoding: Confirm the PC or cloud setup can produce the chosen codec, bitrate, resolution and frame rate. Do not price unlike workloads as though they were equivalent.
  • Attention: Include time spent installing, testing, monitoring and troubleshooting. Its value differs by reader, so there is no universal cash figure for it.
  • Storage and access: Check required video storage, service limits and access conditions alongside the compute or subscription charge.

Which option is likely to suit you?

An old PC may be cheaper in cash when

  • You already own a serviceable PC and do not need significant repairs or replacement parts.
  • Its measured wall-power cost and incremental internet expense are low enough to beat the actual cloud bill over the same 30 days.
  • It passes a realistic test at your chosen stream settings, and you can handle local monitoring and recovery.

Cloud may be a better fit when

  • You want the stream to run without keeping a home computer on.
  • Remote operation and reduced hands-on maintenance matter more to you than the lowest possible cash expense.
  • You have confirmed the service supports your stream workload and accounted for its full monthly charge, storage and other fees.

Neither result can be established from a generic Indian electricity rate or a single cloud instance listing. Fill in your own measured PC draw, local tariff, operating hours, cloud quote and required storage to decide.
