In either case, check the audience view before you begin so presenter notes and controls stay private unless you intend to show them.
Choose the right way to share Keynote
| Goal | Workflow | What the audience sees |
|---|---|---|
| Present to people in a video call | Play the slideshow on your Mac, iPhone, or in Keynote for iCloud, then use the meeting app’s screen-sharing controls. | The shared slideshow window or screen. Sharing controls vary by conferencing app. |
| Put Keynote in a public broadcast | Capture the Keynote window, app, or display in an OBS scene on Mac. | The area framed in the OBS scene, alongside any other sources you add. |
For a solo Mac presentation, a windowed slideshow is usually the easiest way to keep other Mac information accessible while limiting what you share. Full-screen playback is also an option, especially if you are presenting on a separate display. In either workflow, avoid sharing a screen area that includes the presenter display unless you want its notes and controls visible. Apple’s Keynote presentation guide explains the playback options and warns that some conferencing apps may show the presenter display if it falls within the shared area.
Present Keynote in a video call from a Mac
- Choose playback mode: In Keynote, select Play > In Window for a windowed slideshow, or Play > In Fullscreen if that suits your display setup.
- Start the slideshow: Select Play > Play Slideshow. If you chose windowed playback, resize the slideshow window as needed.
- Share from the meeting app: Open the app’s Share menu and select the Keynote window or the appropriate screen. The exact menu labels and behavior depend on the conferencing app.
- Keep notes private: If you use Keynote’s presenter display, keep it outside the shared area. To reduce the chance that another app displays it, open Keynote > Settings > Slideshow and uncheck Show presenter display window in other applications. Then verify the audience view: Apple cautions that a presenter display inside the shared area can still appear in some apps.
- Advance and stop: Use the left and right arrow keys to move between slides. End the share using the conferencing app’s controls.
If you need exact screen-sharing instructions, use the current help for your chosen conferencing service; Apple notes that sharing controls depend on the app.
Capture Keynote in OBS for a public broadcast
On Mac, OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source can capture a whole display, an application, or a specific window. For a clean slide feed, start Keynote in a window and add that window as the capture source; choose a full display instead only when the scene needs to include it. OBS’s Screen Capture documentation describes the source and its operating-system requirements.

OBS documents audio capture through this source on macOS 13 and later; on macOS 12.3–12.6 it is available without audio. Check the current OBS guide for the version and behavior that apply to your Mac. A capture card is not required for this workflow: the documented macOS source captures the display, app, or window directly.

Two or more presenters
Keynote on Mac supports a multi-presenter slideshow for a shared presentation. The host starts it and can share control with another presenter; co-presenters have more limited control unless the host grants it. This is useful for handing off slides while a separate conferencing app carries the conversation. Apple’s multi-presenter instructions describe the host and co-presenter controls.
Common problems and fixes
- The audience sees notes or presenter controls: Check whether the presenter display is inside the shared screen area. Share only the slideshow window where possible, move the presenter display outside the shared area, and confirm the audience view before continuing.
- The wrong window or display is being shared: Stop sharing and choose the Keynote slideshow window or intended screen in the conferencing app. The exact selection flow depends on that app.
- OBS shows a blank or missing capture: Check that OBS has macOS Screen Recording permission, then confirm the selected source is the active Keynote window, app, or display.
- Slides are cropped or too small in OBS: Adjust the source framing in the scene and inspect the preview again before broadcasting.
- OBS does not capture audio through Screen Capture: Check the macOS version. OBS documents audio capture with this source on macOS 13 and later, while its documentation says macOS 12.3–12.6 capture is without audio.
- A co-presenter cannot control the slideshow: The host may need to grant control; co-presenters do not automatically have the host’s full control.
