To keep an event replay available after a YouTube live stream ends, make sure YouTube has an archive, then check that the recording is still present and its visibility allows your intended viewers to watch it. DVR does not preserve a finished broadcast: it lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is live.

Make sure YouTube has an archive

YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on an automatic archive for a longer event. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: archive live streams

For an important event, record a local copy too

A local recording gives you a separate copy under your control if the YouTube archive is missing or unusable. An external SSD is one optional storage choice; it is not required by YouTube and does not affect playback on YouTube. Choose storage capacity based on your recording format and event duration.

Find the replay and set who can watch it

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Open the Live tab and find the event recording.
  3. Open the video’s details and check that the archive exists.
  4. Set Visibility to the audience you intend to reach, then save.
  5. Open the replay as a viewer, if practical, to confirm it plays and is accessible as intended.

YouTube says a creator may post a replay or highlights after a stream; these appear as videos on the channel. The archive can also be deleted, so check that it remains present before sharing it. YouTube Help: archive live streams

Share the replay video, not the ended live player

Once the archive is available, share its watch link so viewers can open the recording as a video on your channel. You can also organize the replay with related event recordings or highlight clips in a playlist, which YouTube recommends for archives and highlights. Understand DVR and Live Redirect

Feature When it operates and what it does What it does not do
YouTube archive After the broadcast, makes the event recording available as a channel video, subject to archive availability and visibility. It is not assured for streams over 12 hours, and visibility or deletion can make the video unavailable.
Local recording Preserves a separate copy under your control. It does not publish that copy to YouTube or change playback of the YouTube archive.
DVR During a live broadcast, lets viewers pause and rewind. It does not preserve the ended event. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions have lower limits.
Live Redirect Can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current broadcast ends. YouTube’s guidance does not describe it as a way to keep the ended event’s own replay playing.

YouTube’s DVR guidance describes its limits for long broadcasts and certain devices. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams Live Redirect is an audience handoff to another destination, not a replay-continuity setting. YouTube Help: Live Redirect

Troubleshoot a replay that is missing or will not play

  • The archive is missing: Check YouTube Studio’s Content > Live tab. If the event ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it; use your local recording if available.
  • The replay exists but viewers cannot watch it: Open its details, review Visibility, set the intended audience access, and save.
  • The link no longer works: Confirm that the archive has not been deleted, then share the watch link for the existing replay video.
  • Viewers could not rewind during the event: That concerns DVR during the live broadcast, not whether a post-stream archive exists. Long streams and some devices have reduced rewind availability.
  • Viewers expect the event to continue after it ends: Share the replay video, or use Live Redirect if the goal is to send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream. Redirect does not keep the event’s own replay playing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuously running YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, rather than preserving one finished event, StreamNeo is a separate option.
