Usually, no. If you mean watching a meditation livestream, computer sleep can interrupt playback; turn off the display while keeping the computer awake instead. If you mean broadcasting your own meditation stream, a software encoder generally needs its computer awake and connected. A standalone hardware encoder may work without a computer, depending on its capabilities and your setup.
First, are you watching or broadcasting?
“Stream” can mean either watching another channel’s meditation broadcast or sending a live feed from your own channel. The practical answer differs:
- Watching: Sleep may stop the browser and its internet connection. Keeping the computer awake with its display off is the more reliable option for listening from that computer.
- Broadcasting: A computer running encoder software must remain awake and connected to send the feed to YouTube. A hardware encoder can remove the computer from some workflows, but check that it supports your source and unattended-stream needs.
If you are watching a meditation livestream
Turn off the display without putting the computer to sleep
Set the screen to turn off while the computer remains awake. This can reduce screen use while leaving the browser and network available for playback. The setting names and availability vary by operating system, device, and power configuration.
- Mac: On power, Apple documents a Battery setting called “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.”
- Windows: Review the screen and sleep timeouts in your power settings. Some configurations may disconnect from the network during sleep, and available settings depend on the computer’s hardware.
For exact labels and behavior, consult Apple’s Mac sleep settings guidance and Microsoft’s Windows power settings guidance. Apple’s separately described “Wake for network access” option concerns access to shared services; it should not be treated as a way to keep a browser stream playing during sleep.

Use another playback device if the computer must sleep
If you need the computer itself to sleep, play the meditation stream on a device that will stay awake and connected, such as a phone, tablet, or other computer. Playback continuity depends on that device’s own power and network settings.
Do not confuse Sleep Timer with continuous playback
YouTube’s computer-player Sleep Timer pauses the video after the selected interval. It is useful when you want playback to stop, not when you want a stream to continue uninterrupted. See YouTube’s Sleep Timer instructions.

If you are broadcasting your own meditation stream
Keep a software encoder’s computer awake
YouTube supports computer-based software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders. With a software encoder, the computer is the machine sending the feed: if it sleeps or loses its connection, the encoder cannot reliably continue transmitting. Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to configure the stream, connect the encoder, and check stream health before leaving it unattended.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to access the Live Control Room.
- Choose or configure the stream and copy its stream key. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed; keep it private.
- Enter the key in your encoder and confirm its destination and video source.
- Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health.
- Test the full setup before relying on it unattended. YouTube advises monitoring streams; for an encoder event, it recommends stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.

Consider standalone hardware only after checking the workflow
A standalone encoder may let you broadcast without keeping a general-purpose computer running, but this is not a universal solution: the source, network connection, and unattended operation must all fit the device. YouTube’s verified-encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus. Its guide describes direct YouTube streaming and a PlayToStream function for scheduling pre-recorded media without a computer. That does not establish that every live-input workflow can run without a computer. Check the device’s documentation against your specific source and schedule before buying or relying on it.
For either approach, test a complete broadcast and confirm that it remains healthy before leaving it alone. A setting that keeps a computer awake does not guarantee uninterrupted internet service or a healthy YouTube stream.
