This gives you control over the picture and sound independently, but your computer, power, internet connection, and upload must stay available for the stream to continue.
Prepare the files and plan the loop
Choose a visual file and a separate sleep-sounds file that you have the right to use in a live broadcast. OBS Media Source supports video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Its Media Source has a Loop property. For several visual files, OBS’s VLC Video Source can play a playlist and loop it; VLC must be installed, and OBS documentation specifies a matching 64-bit VLC installation when you use 64-bit OBS. Keep the source files in stable locations on the computer. If the files are moved or renamed after you set up OBS, the sources may no longer point to them. An external drive is optional, not a requirement; OBS can use local media files.
Build the OBS scene with independent sources
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the sleep stream.
- Add the visual. In Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Name it, select the local video file, and enable Loop. If you want a sequence of visual files, add a VLC Video Source, create its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first; match its 64-bit version to 64-bit OBS when applicable.
- Add the audio separately. In Sources, select + and add a source for the audio file. Choose a supported audio format and configure playback or looping behavior for that source. Keep the visual and audio as separate sources so you can adjust them independently.
- Set the composition. Position and scale the visual in the OBS preview. Check that the source fills the intended canvas and that no unwanted borders or other sources obscure it.
- Preview the whole scene. Listen and watch long enough to confirm that both files start and continue through their loops as intended. The OBS documentation describes source options, but does not guarantee that independent files stay synchronized or restart in lockstep. Test the combined playback yourself, including what happens after switching scenes or restarting OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and lets YouTube accept it; treat it like a password. Do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube before using it again. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that the picture and sound are both arriving at YouTube.
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast (the event or video) from a stream (the audio-video feed sent to YouTube). Its API documentation describes an example where a stream continues for a 24/7 feed while a second broadcast is created for a subset event, but that example does not establish an automatic 24/7 session-management feature for every creator. Keep a local OBS stream running
A local encoder means the computer and internet connection are part of the streaming setup. To reduce avoidable interruptions, prevent the computer from sleeping or shutting down automatically while OBS is streaming, keep source files at their configured paths, and monitor the YouTube feed. The cited documentation does not establish a tested 24/7 OBS configuration or guarantee that a particular computer and connection will stay live.
Plan separately for a replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is under 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, make a local recording backup and consider an intentional restart or event plan before that threshold. Separate broadcasts do not guarantee one uninterrupted watch page, so explain a planned restart to viewers if continuity matters. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Use sound and visuals you are authorized to stream
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights, and require compliance with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Use original, licensed, or otherwise authorized audio and visuals. Keep license records and check that the permission covers live use, the relevant territories, and any archived replay. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can result in a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. Even licensed third-party content may require the channel to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm any allowlist requirements with the rights holder before going live.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The visual or sound does not appear: Check that the source points to the correct file path, the file uses a supported format, and the source is visible and enabled in the scene.
- A playlist does not play or loop: Confirm VLC is installed and that the VLC Video Source playlist and Loop Playlist setting are configured. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies matching 64-bit VLC.
- Audio and video drift or restart at different times: Separate sources are not documented as staying synchronized or restarting in lockstep. Recheck the complete scene and its loop behavior before broadcasting; do not assume one source’s loop controls the other.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder feed: Check that OBS has the stream URL and current stream key from the intended YouTube setup. If you shared the key, reset it and update OBS with the replacement.
- The live broadcast stops while unattended: Check the computer’s sleep and shutdown settings, power, network, and upload connection, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A local setup depends on each of these remaining available.
- The stream is interrupted or shows a placeholder: Check for a copyright match and resolve rights or allowlisting issues with the rights holder. Do not assume that a license automatically prevents Content ID action.
- The replay is missing: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use a local recording backup if you need a copy.
