There isn’t a universal winner among VS Code, Cursor, and Zed. The editor that “gets out of the way” is the one that creates the least friction in your actual work: familiar tools and extensions, a useful AI workflow, or an interface that feels lighter to use. After a month comparing the three, my conclusion is personal rather than a benchmark: choose for the interruptions you notice and the capabilities you cannot afford to lose.
This comparison can’t stand in for every developer’s month. The available account does not specify the projects, languages, machine, extensions, or AI tasks involved, so I won’t invent those details or present performance figures as my own measurements. The product-feature comparisons below come from Zed Industries, which publishes the comparison pages; its performance and product judgments are vendor claims, not independent tests.
What “getting out of the way” means in practice
An editor can feel unobtrusive for different reasons. Familiar extensions and team conventions prevent setup interruptions. AI features can reduce the work of navigating and editing a large codebase, but only if their suggestions are easy to inspect. A quick-feeling interface can make routine actions feel smoother, but advertised latency numbers do not establish how an editor will perform on your machine.
That distinction matters in a three-way comparison: VS Code emphasizes breadth and customization, Cursor places AI prominently in a VS Code-based experience, and Zed combines a native editor with AI and collaboration features. Those are different priorities, not a single league table.

Where each editor fits
| Editor | What it prioritizes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code | A mature, customizable editor with a large extension marketplace, established documentation and community, debugging and remote-development tools, and Copilot integration, as characterized by Zed Industries. | Teams standardized on VS Code, or developers who depend on particular extensions, debugging or remote workflows, or extensive customization. |
| Cursor | An AI-forward editor based on the VS Code experience, with project-wide code understanding and multi-file editing, according to Zed Industries. | Developers who want AI prominent in the workflow while retaining a familiar VS Code-style interface. |
| Zed | A native editor with integrated AI, developer-control features, and collaboration. Zed Industries describes agentic editing, background agents, editable diff review, MCP tool use, external agent support through ACP, and real-time collaboration. | Developers interested in a native-feeling editor and those AI or collaboration workflows, provided the editor’s own extensions cover their needs. |
These descriptions summarize product positioning, not a test of model quality, reliability, or which editor will be fastest on a particular setup. See Zed Industries’ VS Code comparison and Cursor comparison for its account of the products.
Will your extensions and team workflow carry over?
This is the most practical question to answer before switching. Zed has its own extension system and does not directly support VS Code extensions. Zed Industries says that some common capabilities, including Git and language-server-protocol (LSP) support, are built into Zed, but built-in features do not guarantee that a specific extension, integration, or team setup will transfer.
Zed says it supports compatible keybindings, which can make familiar shortcuts easier to retain. Keybindings are not extensions, however: matching shortcuts does not make a VS Code extension run in Zed.
- List the extensions you rely on for languages, debugging, remote development, formatting, and team-specific tasks.
- Check whether Zed’s own extension system or built-in functionality covers each requirement. Treat an approximate replacement as a workflow change, not as full compatibility.
- Ask whether your team expects shared settings, documented VS Code steps, or a common editor. Zed’s comparison itself recommends VS Code when a team is standardized on it or depends on particular extensions and extensive customization.
If that audit reveals a hard dependency, VS Code is the safer choice. A gradual trial on a non-critical project lets you find missing pieces before they interrupt important work.

Can Zed replace Cursor for AI coding?
Both editors describe substantial AI-assisted editing workflows, but a feature list cannot tell you whether the suggestions will be accurate or useful on your code. Zed Industries describes Cursor in terms of project-wide context and multi-file refactoring. It describes Zed as supporting multi-file edits, background agents, diff review, MCP, and external agents through ACP.
The useful comparison is not simply “which has more AI.” It is whether the workflow helps you understand a proposed change and control what lands in your project. In Zed’s described workflow, editable diffs provide a way to inspect and adjust agent-produced changes. For either editor, try representative tasks from your own work and check the resulting edits before treating them as ready to keep. The cited product pages do not establish equal model quality or reliable outcomes.
Cursor’s VS Code foundation may also matter: it aims to put AI into a familiar editor experience. That familiarity is a different advantage from Zed’s native design and integrated agent features. Which feels less disruptive depends on whether you value continuity with VS Code or prefer the way Zed organizes its own workflow.
Does Zed’s performance claim explain a faster-feeling day?
Zed Industries’ 2026 VS Code comparison publishes figures of “<1s startup, <10ms typing latency, ~600MB RAM” for Zed. These are the company’s comparison-page claims, not independent benchmark results or measurements from my month of use. The page also compares VS Code with higher memory and latency figures; those, too, are vendor-published comparisons, not universal measurements across machines and configurations.

A benchmark and a day-to-day sense of flow answer different questions. Startup time and typing latency can matter, but so can extensions, project setup, AI interruptions, and the habits your team has already established. I can’t turn Zed’s figures into a guarantee that it will feel faster on your computer; test the same routine on your own project if responsiveness is a deciding factor.
What Zed says about privacy and collaboration
AI data handling is not the same as local-only AI
Zed’s privacy policy says diagnostic and usage telemetry can be turned off. It also says prompts and code are discarded after each AI request and are not used to train models, and describes contractual zero-retention terms with providers. The policy notes an exception: certain provider-designated models may retain data for a short period for safety purposes. These are Zed’s stated practices; they do not mean every AI interaction is processed only on your device. Check the terms for the specific model you plan to use.
Collaboration is a capability, not a requirement
Zed Industries describes real-time multiplayer editing, cursor sharing, and voice chat as Zed features. Those tools may suit a team that wants to work together inside the editor. They are not, by themselves, a reason for every solo developer or team to switch; judge them against how you actually collaborate.

Choose VS Code if compatibility is the priority
Stay with VS Code when your team has standardized on it, a required extension has no acceptable substitute, or your workflow depends on its customization, debugging, or remote-development tools. In that situation, familiarity and fewer migration surprises are useful features, not a failure to try something new.

Choose Cursor if you want AI in a familiar environment
Cursor is a reasonable candidate if you want project-aware and multi-file AI assistance while keeping a VS Code-based interface. Its product positioning does not guarantee that every model or edit will suit your work, so review the changes and try it against tasks you genuinely perform.
Choose Zed if its workflow removes more friction than it adds
Zed may be the better fit if you want its native editor experience, integrated agent and review tools, or multiplayer features—and your extension audit comes back clean. The trade-off is real: its separate extension system does not bring the VS Code marketplace with it.
A low-risk way to decide
- Write down your must-have extensions, language tools, shortcuts, and team conventions.
- Check the candidate editor’s current documentation and extension support against that list; do not assume keybinding compatibility means extension compatibility.
- Open a non-critical project that resembles your everyday work and try the tasks that usually interrupt you, including the AI edits you would actually consider using.
- Notice both sides of the trade: what becomes smoother, and what new setup, review, or collaboration friction appears.
- Switch only when the practical gain outweighs the workflow you would have to replace.
For me, the month’s conclusion is the title’s: the editor that gets out of the way is the one that interrupts my work least. That verdict is useful only when tied to the reader’s own workflow. The right choice follows from what your trial reveals—not from treating vendor feature descriptions or published performance figures as a universal result.
