To stop Maps suggestions, first identify what you want to suppress: recommended places, predicted destinations or routes, or searches that reappear from history. Google Maps and Apple Maps use separate controls for these behaviors. The steps below let you change future suggestions, remove old entries, or temporarily browse without personalization—without turning off location access that navigation may need.
Identify which kind of suggestion you mean
“Suggestions” can refer to several things, and clearing one kind of data may not affect another. Use the closest match:
- Recommended places: Places Google Maps thinks you might like, based partly on personalization and account activity.
- Predicted destinations or routes: Apple Maps suggestions based on features such as Visited Places or Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations.
- Recent searches: Previous searches shown again in the Maps search interface.
- One-time privacy: A temporary session in Google Maps that does not save searches and places navigated to in the usual way.
Stop personalized place recommendations in Google Maps
Google Maps may use Search Services Personalised Recommendations, Search services history, Timeline, and device information to recommend places. Google’s Maps Help instructions explain the recommendation controls and note that related settings are rolling out gradually.
- Open the Google Account Activity Controls page. You can also follow Google’s Transparency Center guidance.
- Look for controls named Search Services Personalised Recommendations and Search services history, then adjust or turn off the relevant recommendation setting.
- If those controls are not available on your account, review Web & App Activity, which Google says still governs Search services history and personalized recommendations where the newer controls do not match.
Google’s labels and available controls can differ while the rollout is in progress. Changing personalization addresses future recommendations; deleting old activity is a separate action, and does not guarantee that every type of suggestion will stop.

Use Google Maps Incognito for a temporary session
If you only want to browse without personalized recommendations for a while, turn on Incognito in Google Maps. According to Google’s Incognito and Timeline explanation, searches and places navigated to while Incognito is on are not saved to your Google Account, the session does not update Location History, and personalized features such as restaurant recommendations are not shown.
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Turn on Incognito mode.
- When you want your normal account experience back, tap the Incognito icon and turn Incognito mode off.
Incognito applies only while it is active. It does not erase activity saved before the session. Google also describes Maps account controls and Incognito in its Maps control tips.

Turn off predicted destinations in Apple Maps
On iPhone, Apple provides separate controls for Visited Places and Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations. To prevent these features from generating future suggestions:
- Open Settings > Apps > Maps.
- Under Allow Maps to Access, tap Location, then tap Allow More Location Access.
- Turn off Visited Places and/or Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations, depending on which suggestions you want to stop.
Apple’s Maps & Privacy information describes predicted destinations and related personalized Maps features. Menu labels or nesting can vary with iOS versions. Avoid turning off all Maps location access just to suppress suggestions: Apple notes that limiting location functionality can remove useful features, including turn-by-turn navigation.

Remove Apple Maps history and recent searches
Turning off a feature changes future behavior; clearing records removes entries already saved. Apple treats Visited Places history and recent searches as separate items, so clear the relevant one:
Clear Visited Places
On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Maps > Location and turn off Visited Places to stop future recording. In Maps, you can remove an individual visited place or clear the visited-place history. Apple says Visited Places can appear on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. For Apple’s current instructions, see Keep your location history private in Maps.

Clear recent searches on iPhone or iPad
Open Maps and scroll to Recent. Remove a single item or clear all recent searches from that list.
Clear recent searches on Mac
Open Maps, scroll to Recent in the sidebar, then click Clear Recents.

Clearing a history removes past records, but does not by itself disable a feature that may create new records or suggestions. Turn off the matching Apple Maps feature as well if you want to change future behavior.
