What changed in the VS Code R extension update?
The REditorSupport project describes v3.0.0 as a major release centered on improving communication between the extension and running R sessions. Its release headline is “faster, more reliable R session communication, powered by the sess package.” The project does not publish a benchmark figure with that statement, so treat the improvement as qualitative rather than a quantified speed claim. The README directs readers to its changelog for other changes and upgrade notes; the release date and a complete list of changes are not established here. REditorSupport README
sess is bundled with the extension. If it is missing or needs an update, the extension asks you to install or update it; the project quickstart says to accept that prompt. You do not need to install sess separately in advance.
How to install or update REditorSupport.r
The current stable extension listing requires VS Code 1.110 or later. The project’s setup guidance also calls for R 3.4.0 or later and the R package languageserver. These are version floors stated in the documentation, not a guarantee about compatibility with every R distribution or configuration. - Install R 3.4.0 or later. On Windows, the project recommends allowing the R installer to write the R path to the registry so the extension can find R.
- Open R and install the language server by running
install.packages("languageserver"). - In VS Code, open the Extensions view, search for
REditorSupport.r, then install or update the stable extension. You can also install it from the Marketplace or Open VSX. The documented command-line extension identifier isREditorSupport.r. - When the extension prompts you to install or update
sess, accept the prompt.
For typical use, choose the stable Marketplace or Open VSX release. The project also makes a development pre-release available as a GitHub release asset; it is rebuilt from pushes to the project’s main branch. That build is intended for users who specifically want the development version, rather than as the default update path. REditorSupport README

The project describes a broader set of capabilities in its README and Marketplace listing. These are the extension’s documented capabilities, not all features introduced by v3.0.0.

The language server provides completion and other code-editing features. Microsoft identifies lintr as the R linting provider and the separate R Debugger extension as the source of debugging capabilities; installing REditorSupport.r alone does not install that debugger. Required setup versus optional companion tools
The basic setup is R, the languageserver package, and the R extension. Other tools extend particular workflows and are not universal prerequisites.

The project’s Getting Started page says the extension is intended to make writing R and working with R sessions interactively in VS Code easier, not to serve as a full drop-in replacement for RStudio. That page was last modified on 2021-12-15, so it is useful for understanding the project’s positioning, not for current compatibility details. It also notes the trade-off: VS Code offers flexibility, including for multilingual projects, remote servers, containers, self-managed sessions, and multiple simultaneous sessions, but can require more setup and configuration.
