Safari 16 introduced collaborative Shared Tab Groups, passkeys designed to replace passwords, and a broad set of web-platform updates. It launched on September 12, 2022, first arriving with iOS 16 and as an update for macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur.
When Safari 16 launched and which systems received it
Apple released Safari 16.0 on September 12, 2022, as version 18614.1.25. It shipped with iOS 16 and was available as an update for macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur. WebKit said macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 versions would follow in October 2022. Apple’s Safari 16 release notes and WebKit’s Safari 16 feature overview document the release.
Those are the launch-era availability details, not a current compatibility list. Safari updates are delivered with operating-system updates, so the Safari version available on a device depends on its installed OS.
How Shared Tab Groups work
A Shared Tab Group lets a group of people collaborate around a collection of websites. Members can add tabs and see what others are viewing, with changes appearing as the group works. Apple presented this as useful for shared activities such as planning a trip, researching purchases, coordinating a project, or collecting links for family use. Apple’s iOS 16 announcement describes the feature.

On iPad, Apple also described shared bookmarks and a customizable Tab Group start page. Participants can edit the start page, including its background image and sections, and see updates. This makes the group more than a way to send someone a list of links: it provides a shared browsing space that can change as people contribute. Apple’s iPadOS 16 feature page outlines those capabilities.
How Safari 16 passkeys differ from passwords
Passkeys are credentials intended to replace passwords. Rather than entering a shared secret that a website stores, a user signs in with a cryptographic credential and confirms the action using Touch ID or Face ID. Apple said passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption. Apple also says the passkeys remain on the user’s devices rather than being stored on a web server. Apple’s iOS 16 announcement explains its design.

That design can reduce exposure to phishing and to breaches of a website’s password database: there is no password for a user to type into a convincing fake login page, and the site does not hold the passkey itself. It does not mean every account or sign-in is automatically secure; protection also depends on the website supporting passkeys and the security of the user’s devices and account.
Passkeys are not limited to signing in on Apple hardware. Apple described using an iPhone to authenticate with a service on a non-Apple device; its iPadOS materials describe scanning a QR code as one way to initiate that cross-device sign-in. Apple’s iPadOS 16 feature page provides that example.

Other Safari 16 changes for web developers
Safari 16 added support for several web-platform capabilities. These matter when a developer decides which browser features a site can use, and whether it needs alternatives for browsers that do not support them.
- CSS layout and animation: container queries and container query units, subgrid, animatable grids, and offset path.
- Scrolling and media: overscroll behavior and the resolution media query.
- HTML forms:
requestSubmit()andshowPicker()for HTML inputs. - Payments: Apple Pay merchant-token support for recurring and multi-merchant payments.
WebKit’s Safari 16.0 overview lists these platform changes. Support for a feature in Safari does not by itself guarantee that a particular website uses it; implementation and compatibility choices remain with the site developer.
