Apple announced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026. The new chips put Neural Accelerators in every GPU core and pair them with a faster Neural Engine and higher memory bandwidth, targeting AI tasks that run on the laptop. M5 Pro configurations support up to 64GB of unified memory; M5 Max goes up to 128GB. Apple opened pre-orders March 4, with availability starting March 11, 2026.
What is new in the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro?
The central change is the chip architecture for AI and graphics workloads. Apple says every GPU core in M5 Pro and M5 Max includes a Neural Accelerator. The company also cites a faster Neural Engine and increased unified-memory bandwidth, which can matter when a workload needs to keep model data and other working data accessible to the chip.
Apple advertises up to 4x AI performance versus the previous generation and up to 8x versus M1 models. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent lab results. In Apple’s February 2026 comparisons, preproduction 16-inch systems—M5 Pro with an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU and 64GB memory, and M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU and 128GB memory—were tested against specified production M4 and M1 systems. The headline figures describe selected workloads and configurations, not a guarantee that every AI app will run at those multiples.
Apple also claims up to 30 percent faster pro CPU performance and up to 50 percent higher graphics performance compared with M4 Pro and M4 Max. Its workload-specific comparisons include up to 7.8x faster AI image generation on M5 Pro versus M1 Pro, and up to 8x on M5 Max versus M1 Max; prompt processing is claimed to be up to 6.9x faster on M5 Pro and 6.7x faster on M5 Max against the respective M1 predecessors. For DaVinci Resolve Studio video-effects rendering, Apple claims M5 Max is up to 5.4x faster than M1 Max. Each figure is tied to Apple’s chosen test and comparison systems, rather than a general speed rating.

Can MacBook Pro M5 run AI models locally?
The higher memory ceilings and bandwidth make these configurations more capable candidates for local AI work, but the announcement does not establish which particular models will fit or how quickly an individual third-party app will run. Model size, quantization, software support and the memory used by other applications all affect whether a model can run locally. M5 Pro offers up to 64GB unified memory and 307GB/s bandwidth; M5 Max offers up to 128GB and up to 614GB/s. Choose by the memory and compute demands of the model and workflow you actually use, not by Apple’s broad performance multiplier alone.
M5 Pro vs. M5 Max: what changes?
M5 Max is aimed at sustained graphics, media and memory-intensive work; M5 Pro is the lower-cost choice when its GPU and memory ceiling are sufficient. The table summarizes the listed configuration differences. Battery estimates are Apple’s maximum video-streaming figures, and vary by size and chip.

Apple’s technical pages list the GPU and memory configurations above. The 14-inch M5 Pro is available with a 15-core or 18-core CPU; the 16-inch listing specifies an 18-core CPU. The listed M5 Max configurations use a 32- or 40-core GPU. These are configuration choices, so check the selected model and market before purchase.
When M5 Pro is the better fit
Choose M5 Pro if your projects fit within 64GB of unified memory and you do not need the additional GPU capacity or higher bandwidth of M5 Max. It starts at a lower U.S. price and has a higher stated maximum video-streaming estimate than M5 Max at the same screen size. For AI tasks, the practical question is whether the model and other active work fit in memory, not whether the Max name sounds more future-proof.

When M5 Max is worth considering
M5 Max makes sense when your work can use its 32- or 40-core GPU, needs more than 64GB of unified memory, or benefits from up to 614GB/s bandwidth. Those capabilities can be relevant to larger local AI workloads, demanding graphics work and video effects. Apple’s DaVinci Resolve figure is a comparison with M1 Max on a specific workload, not evidence that every editing workflow improves by 5.4x. The U.S. starting-price premium over M5 Pro is $1,400 for the 14-inch model and $1,200 for the 16-inch model.
Which size is better for AI and video editing?
Both sizes use Liquid Retina XDR displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz, but the larger panel provides more workspace and the 16-inch models have higher listed maximum video-streaming estimates. Screen resolution is 3024-by-1964 on the 14.2-inch display and 3456-by-2234 on the 16.2-inch display. The 14-inch model is the more compact option; choose the 16-inch if the larger built-in workspace matters more than portability. Apple does not provide comparative weight or sustained-performance measurements between sizes, so its published information does not establish that one size is inherently faster for the same chip configuration.

For AI or video editing, decide the chip first based on memory, GPU and media workload needs, then choose the screen size that suits how you work. Apple provides distinct battery estimates by size and chip, but those are maximum video-streaming figures rather than a promise of runtime during intensive model inference or rendering.

Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max models start with 1TB and 2TB storage respectively, and claims up to 2x faster SSD read and write speeds, reaching up to 14.5GB/s. This is a maximum Apple figure; actual speed depends on the configuration and workload. Both sizes include Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a 12MP Center Stage camera and a Liquid Retina XDR display. Apple says video streaming can reach up to 24 hours depending on size and chip, with the configuration-specific estimates shown above.
