Threads now has native direct messages, so you can chat without switching to Instagram. Messaging has expanded since its July 2025 launch to include message requests and group chats, but availability still depends on your account and country. Threads DMs are not end-to-end encrypted.
How to send someone a DM on Threads
If messaging is available on your account, use Threads’ messaging area to start a conversation with an eligible person. At launch, Threads allowed adults to message their Threads followers and people who followed them on Instagram mutually; the conversation took place inside Threads rather than Instagram.
Meta later added message requests for people you do not follow. Those messages are kept apart from the main inbox. If you want to invite someone to contact you, a “DM me” or “Message me” phrase in a post or reply may become a direct chat link—but this was a limited test, not a universally available feature.
When a message goes to requests
Messages from people you do not follow can appear in Message Requests instead of the primary inbox. Meta says links and media are disabled in these requests, rate limits apply, and suspected harmful content may be filtered into a hidden folder. To stop receiving these requests, choose “Only People You Follow” in the message-request setting.

Who can use Threads messaging, and where?
The initial rollout was for users aged 18 and older in most markets where Threads was available. Japan, Australia, the UK, and the EU were initially excluded; Meta said messaging expanded to the EU in October 2025. These rollout details describe the feature’s launch and subsequent expansion, not a definitive list of countries where it is available today. Access can vary by account and country.
Meta first tested a separate Threads inbox in June 2025 in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. That limited test supported one-to-one messages and kept the inbox separate from Instagram’s. Meta announced the broader native messaging launch on July 1, 2025, describing DMs as one of the most requested features.

Can you message people without Instagram?
Yes. Threads messaging is built into Threads, so you do not have to leave the app and use Instagram’s inbox to chat. The initial eligibility rules did include Instagram connections as one way to reach someone—mutual Instagram followers could message—but the separate Threads inbox was created for conversations on Threads itself.
Meta said that more than one-third of daily Threads users with connections follow mostly different accounts on Threads than on Instagram. Its stated rationale was that Threads had developed its own interest graph, making it useful to support private conversations there.

Does Threads have group chats?
Yes. Group chats began rolling out in October 2025, with up to 50 Threads followers per chat. Meta described support for custom chat names, photos, videos, GIFs, and stickers; invite links were planned at the time of the announcement.
Are Threads DMs encrypted?
No. Threads DMs are not end-to-end encrypted. Threads VP of Product Emily Dalton Smith said, “We’re not encrypting our DMs,” explaining that the feature was intended for direct conversations around what is happening now and that encryption was less central to that experience. Do not treat a private Threads conversation as an end-to-end encrypted chat.

The February 2026 shortcut was a test in selected accounts in the United States and Canada, not a feature to assume every Threads user can use. The same account-based variability matters when checking whether messaging or group-chat options appear in your app.
