Sometimes—but “safe on most plastics” applies only to a specific cleaner, not to every plastic part. Polycarbonate (including Lexan) and some ABS parts are common exceptions in manufacturer guidance. Check the exact product’s compatibility warnings and spot-test the actual part before applying cleaner broadly.

Why contact cleaner can damage some plastics

Contact cleaner is a product category, not a single formula. Solvents and additives vary between products, so one cleaner may be approved for a plastic that another warns against. Even a manufacturer’s “safe on most plastics” claim is not a guarantee for every polymer, blend, coating, or adhesive.

A generic compatibility chart also cannot account for every finished part. Plastics may contain blends, protective coatings, or decorative coatings that react differently from the base material. MG Chemicals advises spot-testing Electrosolve 409B even when its chart predicts high compatibility. There is no universal plastic-safety rating or independent cross-brand test established by the available product evidence; the guidance here is manufacturer-specific.

What manufacturers say about common contact cleaners

Product Plastic compatibility and intended use Drying or other cautions
WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner WD-40 says it is safe on most plastics, rubber, and listed metals; it is a quick-drying, no-residue cleaner for sensitive electronics. The company says to test plastic first and avoid adhesives, device screens, and keyboards. Manufacturer product information Follow the product label and spot-test the specific part.
CRC Contact Cleaner & Protectant 03140 CRC labels it safe on most plastics and advises testing a small area first. Manufacturer product specification CRC lists a 30-second full-dry time for this product only; it is not a general drying time for contact cleaners.
CRC Contact Cleaner 2000 VC Labeled safe on most plastics, but explicitly excludes polycarbonate plastics. Manufacturer product information Use the product’s specific warnings rather than relying on the broad “most plastics” wording.
MG Chemicals Electrosolve 409B A very fast-drying, zero-residue cleaner for connectors, contacts, circuit breakers, microprocessors, LEDs, and PCBs. Its compatibility chart rates ABS and polycarbonate poor. Compatibility chart and technical data sheet Product information and instructions MG Chemicals says not to use it on live circuits. Spot-test even materials the chart rates favorably.
CAIG DeoxIT D-Series A contact treatment as well as a cleaner. CAIG recommends compatibility testing on critical parts and equipment with aging ABS plastic. Manufacturer guidance Do not assume that a plastic-safe formulation will suit an aged or critical part without testing.

Can you use contact cleaner on ABS, polycarbonate, or Lexan?

ABS

Do not assume ABS is safe. MG Chemicals rates ABS poor for Electrosolve 409B, and CAIG calls for extra caution with aging ABS in vintage equipment. The risk depends on the exact cleaner and the part’s condition, so verify the product’s compatibility information and test the actual material.

Polycarbonate and Lexan

Use particular caution with polycarbonate. CRC Contact Cleaner 2000 explicitly excludes it, and CRC’s electrical electronic-parts cleaner warns against Lexan, Noryl, and polycarbonate-type plastics. MG Chemicals also rates polycarbonate poor for 409B. Lexan is a brand name associated with polycarbonate, so a warning for either is relevant to parts made from that material. CRC electrical electronic-parts cleaner warning

Other plastics

MG Chemicals’ 409B chart rates PVC, polypropylene, and high-density polyethylene more favorably than ABS or polycarbonate. That rating applies to 409B and does not establish compatibility with every cleaner or finished part. Check the specific product chart and still perform a spot test.

How to test and apply contact cleaner safely

  1. Identify the exact product. Read the can and technical data sheet for its product number. Look for named plastics, exclusions, residue or protectant information, flammability, ventilation, and energized-equipment warnings.
  2. Disconnect power. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions before cleaning. MG Chemicals specifically says Electrosolve 409B is not for live circuits.
  3. Remove loose dirt. Clear dust and grit first so spraying does not spread abrasive debris across the part.
  4. Spot-test a representative area. Apply a small amount to a hidden edge or, ideally, scrap with the same plastic and coating. A chart cannot reliably account for blends and surface coatings.
  5. Wait until fully dry and inspect. Use the product’s own drying guidance. CRC’s 30-second figure applies only to Contact Cleaner & Protectant 03140. Check for whitening, crazing, cracks, swelling, tackiness, discoloration, lost gloss, or softened lettering. Stop if you see any change.
  6. Apply only where appropriate. If the test passes and the product is approved for the part, use a controlled spray or applicator aimed at the metal contact. Avoid pooling and keep cleaner away from screens, adhesives, membranes, labels, keyboards, and printed graphics.
  7. Let the part dry before restoring service. Reassemble only when fully dry and when the equipment maker permits the device to be powered or used again.

Choose a cleaner for the job, not just its plastic claim

When comparing products, check more than the phrase “safe on most plastics.” Match the cleaner to the part and the task:

  • Plastic compatibility: Look for explicit guidance on ABS, polycarbonate/Lexan, acrylic (PMMA), PVC, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), nylon, and polystyrene when relevant to the equipment.
  • Residue and protection: A zero-residue cleaner is different from a product that leaves a lubricating or protective film. Choose based on whether the contact needs cleaning alone or treatment and protection.
  • Drying behavior: Use the stated drying time for the exact product, not another product in the same category.
  • Electrical and handling warnings: Check flammability, ventilation requirements, and whether the cleaner may be used around energized equipment.
  • Part and task: Contact cleaners are intended for electrical contacts and related components such as connectors, switches, relays, controls, jacks, and PCBs. They are not general-purpose cleaners for screens, keyboards, labels, or glued assemblies.

Can you spray contact cleaner on a plastic connector or PCB?

Only if the exact cleaner is suitable for the connector’s plastics and coatings and its instructions permit the intended use. Apply it selectively to the contact area, rather than soaking the surrounding housing or board. For a PCB, confirm the cleaner is specified for that kind of electronic component; MG Chemicals lists 409B for PCBs but warns against use on live circuits and rates ABS and polycarbonate poor. Let the assembly dry fully before restoring power.

What is the best plastic-safe contact cleaner?

There is no single best choice for every plastic part. Choose a product whose manufacturer guidance matches the specific material and task, then test it on the actual part. If the plastic is unknown, aged, coated, or critical—and the product does not clearly establish compatibility—do not spray it broadly; use a method approved by the equipment maker instead.
