Announced on August 14, 2018, it was described by EMA as more than 100 pages of practical tips, checklists, graphics, and further resources—not a manual of software commands. Its central focus is building a manufacturable PCB layout through a sound workflow, effective communication with project stakeholders, and Design for Excellence (DFX).
What the guide covers
EMA presents the guide as a process-level foundation for newer electrical engineers and PCB designers, including engineers taking on PCB work alongside their other responsibilities. Its goal is to explain what needs to happen, in what order, and how design decisions affect the finished board.
The subject matter spans the path from early project planning to manufacturing handoff. A related EMA course module lists these topics:
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and the role of DFX.
- Identifying PCB design stakeholders and their responsibilities.
- Schematic capture.
- Layout setup and component placement.
- Board stackup, routing, and planes.
- Design for Test (DFT), including in-circuit test and JTAG.
- Fabrication and assembly data.
- Future directions in PCB design.
The practical thread connecting those subjects is manufacturability: a layout is not finished simply because it looks complete in CAD. Designers also need to consider how the board will be fabricated, assembled, tested, documented, and handed off.

Why DFX and stakeholders matter
DFX means Design for Excellence: a broad approach to making design choices with downstream needs in view. DFM—Design for Manufacturing—is one part of that picture. The guide’s stated focus on DFX and manufacturing encourages designers to account for the people and processes beyond schematic and layout creation.
Those people are the PCB design stakeholders: the colleagues or teams whose requirements, review, or work affect the board’s success. Establishing who is involved and communicating with them early can help keep the design flow workable and make manufacturing and test requirements visible before the handoff.
How to choose between the ebook, hardcover, and course
The ebook, printed edition, and EMA’s related training serve different learning preferences. The digital guide is the most direct starting point for a software-neutral overview; a hardcover can suit readers who prefer a desk reference; and the course adds structured instruction and software-specific practice.
| Option | Learning style | Software focus | Availability and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free digital guide | Self-paced reading | EMA says its guidance is intended to support design success regardless of CAD software. | EMA announced it as a free ebook in August 2018; consult EMA’s guide page for access: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to PCB Design. |
| Hardcover | Printed reference for a desk or classroom | Same process-oriented subject matter as the guide. | EMA announced the edition in February 2019 and reported a historical $39.99 price through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Current price, stock, and regional availability are not stated in that announcement: EMA’s hardcover announcement. |
| Structured course module | Guided, self-paced course; the related module is described as approximately 4.5 hours. | The broader learning path includes OrCAD-specific instruction; EMA’s introduction course walks through OrCAD Capture and OrCAD PCB Designer using an Arduino design. | Course access and current terms are not stated here. See EMA’s training information. |
What the guide is—and is not
This is a PCB design guide for understanding the workflow and decisions involved in producing a board that can be built and tested. EMA’s description emphasizes principles that apply across CAD platforms, so it is suited to readers looking for process knowledge rather than instructions tied to a particular software interface.
Rank #3
Readers who need hands-on practice in a specific tool may prefer to pair the guide with platform-specific instruction. EMA’s related introduction course uses OrCAD Capture and OrCAD PCB Designer, then applies the workflow to an Arduino design. That makes the course a more targeted option for learning those products, rather than a substitute for the guide’s broader process overview.
Who should start with it
- New electrical engineers: Use the guide to build a map of the work that surrounds schematic capture and PCB layout.
- New PCB designers: Follow the process topics to understand how placement, stackup, routing, test, and manufacturing data connect.
- Students and educators: Use the digital edition as a no-cost introduction, or consider a printed reference if a physical copy is useful for study or teaching.
- Experienced engineers new to PCB ownership: Consult it for a workflow perspective when PCB design becomes part of a broader engineering role.
Access and the hardcover edition
EMA’s original announcement presents the digital guide as free. Its later hardcover announcement reported a $39.99 price in 2019 through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, but that is a historical price, not confirmation of what a copy costs or whether it is currently in stock. Check the retailer listings directly before buying; current marketplace availability and regional pricing are not established by the announcements.
