The 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed facility is designed to house four people during year-long mission simulations, letting NASA study how crews live, work, and maintain a habitat under Mars-like operational constraints.
What is inside NASA’s simulated Mars habitat?
Mars Dune Alpha has separate living and working areas. Its interior supports everyday crew life alongside research and simulated mission work. NASA imagery from the current mission shows a science glove box for research tasks, an airlock leading to a simulated Mars surface area, exercise equipment, and a hydroponic system for growing crops.
The facility also provides space and equipment for maintenance, geological sample handling, medical activities such as blood collection, and preparation for simulated extravehicular activities (EVAs), or Marswalks. These systems let researchers observe how people and procedures function together in a confined habitat; the facility is an analog, not a flight-ready Mars base or a complete reproduction of Martian conditions.
How large is Mars Dune Alpha, and where is it?
NASA describes the habitat as 1,700 square feet, with capacity for four crew members. It is located at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The size and location are documented on NASA’s CHAPEA program page.

Who is living in the habitat?
Mission 2 has four volunteer crew members: Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, Matthew Montgomery, and James Spicer. They entered Mars Dune Alpha on October 19, 2025, for a planned 378-day simulation scheduled to end October 31, 2026, according to NASA’s Mission 2 page. NASA’s May 7, 2026 status update reported that the crew had completed 200 days; the mission was still in progress at that point.
What does the CHAPEA crew do during the simulation?
The crew carries out a demanding routine that includes simulated Marswalks, robotic operations, scientific work, habitat maintenance, exercise, and crop cultivation. NASA also uses medical technology tests and planned equipment malfunctions to examine how crews respond to operational problems.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

These activities take place within constraints intended to make the experience more mission-like: limited resources, prolonged isolation, delayed communications, and a simulated communications blackout. NASA lists a communication delay of up to 22 minutes for Mission 2. The crew must work through problems with the tools, equipment, software, supplies, and connectivity available to them rather than relying on immediate outside help.

CHAPEA stands for Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog. NASA uses the missions to collect health, behavioral, cognitive, and operational data. The goal is to improve mission procedures and planning, habitat design, and crew support systems for future Moon and Mars missions—not to prove that Mars Dune Alpha itself could operate on Mars.

A long-duration simulation gives researchers a way to study how isolation, limited resources, workload, and communication delays interact over time. NASA Human Research Program project scientist and Johnson mission manager Sara Whiting noted that “Extended-duration missions are relatively rare in NASA’s history to date.” Mission 2 is therefore an opportunity to examine crew performance across an extended stay, although NASA had not published a final scientific result for the mission in its May 2026 update.
