They can draw on the same conversations, but they do different jobs. Keeping a chat does not necessarily mean the assistant will use it as personalization context, and deleting a chat may not remove a separate memory derived from it.
A useful shorthand is a filing cabinet versus a working note: history is the retrievable record, while memory is context brought into a new interaction. That is only an analogy; services can have several layers of saved facts, summaries, past-chat retrieval, and connected-app information, with separate controls for each.
What is the difference between AI memory and chat history?

These terms describe user-facing behavior, not a universal technical design. An assistant does not necessarily retain a permanent profile, remember every detail, or consult every old conversation for every answer. OpenAI, for example, says ChatGPT does not search all chat history for every response; Google documents past-chat personalization as a feature with specific eligibility and settings.
Why can an assistant have more than one kind of memory?
“Memory” can refer to distinct layers within one service. ChatGPT separates explicit saved memories from information derived from past chats. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chat history, while history-derived information can change as the system updates what is useful to remember. Its help page puts the distinction this way: “Unlike an explicit saved memory, information derived from chat history can change as ChatGPT updates what is most useful to remember.” OpenAI Help Center: Memory in ChatGPT.

Other services may combine memory of earlier chats with connected-account data or response preferences. Google describes Gemini personalization as potentially using past Gemini chats, certain connected Google apps, and preferences or response instructions. The user-facing descriptions do not establish every internal mechanism, so it is more useful to check what a specific control covers than to assume all assistants work alike.
How ChatGPT handles memory and chat history
OpenAI’s controls distinguish saved memories, reference to chat history, and the conversation archive. Their effects are not interchangeable.
Saved memories and past-chat reference
Saved memories are details ChatGPT has saved or been asked to remember; they are separate from the chats where those details appeared. Reference chat history lets relevant information from earlier conversations inform future responses. OpenAI says history-derived information can change over time and notes that memory summaries are high-level, so they may omit details. See OpenAI’s memory controls and explanation.
Turning off reference to past chats schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. It does not delete the original conversations. Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history; when saved-memory reference remains on, the settings allow past-chat reference to be managed separately.

Removing remembered information
Deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a saved memory created from it. To remove remembered information from its sources, OpenAI says users may need to remove the memory itself and delete relevant chats, files, or connected apps. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Consult the Memory FAQ for the applicable controls.
Temporary Chats do not create or update memories. OpenAI says you can choose whether an existing memory is used before starting a Temporary Chat. If you save that chat, it becomes a regular chat.
Deleting conversations
Regular and archived chats remain saved until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them. OpenAI says deleting a saved chat removes it from the account view immediately and schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Temporary Chats do not appear in history unless saved, and OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. These are chat-retention rules, not the same as memory controls. How Gemini handles personalization and recent chats
Google documents recent chat history as an organization feature: users can search, pin, rename, and delete conversations. Separately, Gemini may reference older chats in a new conversation under the conditions Google specifies. When it does, a response may show “Previous chats” under sources and related content; Google cautions that this label can occasionally appear incorrectly. Eligibility and supported features
Google’s cited help page says past-chat personalization requires that the user:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Use a personal Google Account, rather than a managed account.
- Have Keep Activity enabled.
The page lists the Gemini mobile app, web app, Gemini in Chrome in supported countries, and smartwatch as supported surfaces. It says some modes, including Gems and Live chats, are not covered by this past-chat feature. Availability can change, so check Google’s current past-chat personalization instructions for the account and platform you use.
Turning it off and correcting information
Google’s instructions let users turn off this memory feature, delete past chats from Gemini Apps Activity, and correct what Gemini knows by correcting it in a chat. These actions address different parts of the experience. Google also cautions that disconnecting an app alone may not prevent Gemini from reusing information already present in a past chat.
Google separately documents importing from another AI platform. Its instructions distinguish importing remembered preferences and facts for future personalization from importing a full chat history by file, and list the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom as exclusions at the time of that documentation. Check Google’s import instructions before relying on availability; the listed regions and feature eligibility are not a universal statement about every Gemini feature.

What Anthropic’s retention information does—and does not—establish
Anthropic’s consumer retention guidance describes conversation deletion and model-improvement use, not the mechanics of a Claude memory feature. Dated July 1, 2026, it says deleted consumer conversations are removed from chat history immediately and backend storage within 30 days. If users allow chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, Anthropic may retain new or resumed chats in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines; the page says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. These statements concern retention and model improvement and should not be read as a description of how Claude memory works. See Anthropic’s consumer data-retention guidance.
How to check what an AI assistant remembers
- Identify the account and product. Check whether you are using a personal or managed account, which app or web version is involved, and whether the relevant feature is available in your region or chat mode.
- Open the service’s memory or personalization controls. Look for separate switches for saved memories, past-chat reference, activity, or connected apps rather than assuming one “memory” setting governs everything.
- Inspect and correct remembered information. Use the product’s memory view or correction instructions where available. For Gemini, Google says you can correct what it knows in a chat; for ChatGPT, saved memories have separate controls.
- Remove both context and source material when needed. Delete a saved memory and the relevant conversation, file, or connected source if the service requires those actions separately. Check its instructions for any deletion delay or exception.
- Verify the archive separately. If the goal is to remove a conversation from your account, use chat-history or activity controls. Turning off personalization may leave the original chat intact.
Does turning off memory delete chat history?
Not necessarily. OpenAI explicitly says turning off reference to past chats does not itself remove the original conversations. Gemini’s past-chat personalization controls and recent-chat history are also documented separately. Check the exact setting’s description and delete conversations through the history or activity controls if you want them removed.
Does deleting a chat erase everything the assistant learned from it?
Not always. OpenAI says a saved memory can remain after its original chat is deleted, so removing the remembered fact may require a separate action. For Gemini, Google says disconnecting a connected app alone may not prevent reuse of information already included in a past chat. The steps depend on the product and on where the information was saved or drawn from.
Memory, history, retention, and model improvement are different controls
A single privacy switch should not be assumed to govern everything. Chat retention determines how long conversations are kept; memory controls affect whether information is used to personalize later responses; model-improvement settings govern a separate use described by the provider. Safety and debugging exceptions may also apply. The cited services do not establish a uniform cross-vendor standard, and their policies differ by account type, settings, and feature.
Avoid entering sensitive information on the assumption that personalization is harmless or that deletion is instantaneous. Before relying on a control, read its current description and the provider’s retention terms for your specific account.
