If a Google Gemini Gem seems to ignore its instructions, first confirm you are chatting with the intended Gem, then review and save its instructions, test one behavior in the preview, and check any knowledge files it depends on. Google documents these steps for using and editing Gems, but does not promise that they will fix every case or explain why a particular response went off track.
1. Confirm that the intended Gem is active
A regular Gemini chat or a different Gem may not use the instructions you expect. In the Gemini web app, open the sidebar, choose Gems, and select the Gem under My Gems before sending your prompt. Google’s Gems usage guide describes selecting a Gem from the sidebar to use it in a chat.
Once selected, try the same request that revealed the problem. If the result changes, the issue may have been the active chat rather than the Gem’s wording; if not, continue with the checks below.
2. Review and save the instructions
Open the Gem for editing and check that its role and desired behavior are stated plainly. Add the context the Gem needs and specify the style or format you want. Google’s guidance recommends giving Gems specific context and style, but that advice is not a guarantee of exact compliance. The Google Blog tips for getting started with Gems also explain that users can rewrite or add to the prefilled instructions of some premade Gems.

- One Button, Your AI, Instantly: The BRS-180 has a dedicated AI button on top. Press it once and it wakes Google Assistant, Siri, or whichever assistant lives on your paired device. A memory function saves your last volume, sleep sound, and light settings automatically.
- Built for the Nightstand, Night After Night: The soft fabric-wrapped enclosure sits on a nightstand, dresser, or shelf without looking like a gadget. Plug it in over USB-C and it runs continuously, or use the built-in rechargeable battery for up to 6 hours of wireless playback. Either way it is ready when you are. Available in White, Black, and Green.
- 16 Sleep Sounds, Fully Customizable: Choose from 16 built-in sleep sounds that play straight from the speaker with no phone, no app, and no subscription. Set a 15, 30, or 60-minute sleep timer and the sound fades out by itself. Want a different library? Connect it to any PC with the included USB-C cable and swap out every sound stored on the device.
- Replace vague requests such as “be helpful” with a concrete action and intended output.
- State important constraints directly, such as what to include, what to avoid, and how to format the answer.
- Save your edits before testing. An unsaved change will not test the revised instructions.
The editor’s instruction-rewrite feature can draft more comprehensive wording. Treat its output as a draft: inspect it, edit it to match your needs, and save it rather than assuming a rewrite will solve the issue.
3. Test one behavior in the preview
The Gem editor includes a preview pane where you can try a prompt and revise the instructions. Use a short prompt that tests one important behavior at a time—for example, whether the Gem follows a requested format. Keeping the test narrow makes it easier to see whether a particular edit appears to help; it is a troubleshooting method, not a result Google guarantees.

If the preview behaves as intended, test the same focused prompt in a chat after selecting that Gem. If the two results differ, check that the chat is using the same Gem and that you are testing the same request.
4. Check any knowledge files the Gem relies on
If the Gem’s answer depends on a document or other source, open its Knowledge section and confirm that the relevant file is attached. Google’s usage guide says users can edit a Gem to add or remove files. It also says a Google Drive file uses its most recent version and that changes to that Drive file are reflected in the Gem.

Supports OTA updates to keep your box running the latest firmware.
For a Drive source, Google says Keep Activity must be on and Workspace must be connected. If those conditions are not met, verify the account and connection settings before relying on a Drive file as the Gem’s knowledge source.

Google’s published Gems instructions explain how to create, use, preview, edit, and manage Gems. They do not provide a cause-specific diagnosis or guaranteed remedy for a Gem that continues to disregard its instructions. These checks can help identify a wrong chat, unsaved wording, a test that is too broad, or a missing or unsuitable knowledge source; they cannot establish why an individual response failed.

Google has announced that Skills will replace Gems in 2027. Its transition page, last updated September 30, 2026, says the Gemini app Skills rollout is scheduled to begin October 13, 2026, and Gems are scheduled to move to Settings on November 17, 2026. Google lists earliest discontinuation dates of no sooner than March 1, 2027 for business and enterprise, and no sooner than June 1, 2027 for Education. These are announced milestones, not an explanation for instruction-following problems; check Google’s page if your interface or timing differs, since dates may change.
