They are losing access to some models, not Gemini altogether. Google’s October 2026 notice says changes for personal accounts without an AI subscription start taking effect on October 9, 2026. After the change, the free tier lists Flash-Lite; AI Plus lists Flash-Lite and Flash; and AI Pro and AI Ultra list all three: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email with their individual effective date.
Which Gemini models will each plan include?
Google’s October 2026 notice describes the model access shown below for personal accounts after the changes take effect. It is an access comparison, not a guarantee that every model is always available: Google says availability and usage limits can change.
| Personal-account tier | Models listed after the change | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| No Google AI plan | Flash-Lite | Pro is not listed; standard usage limits apply, and Google notes high-demand limitations may apply. |
| Google AI Plus | Flash-Lite and Flash | Pro is not listed. Google says Plus subscribers should receive an email explaining their effective date. |
| Google AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro | All three models are listed. |
| Google AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro | All three models are listed. |
The practical distinction is model choice: free users retain Flash-Lite, and Plus users retain Flash, but neither tier’s post-change row includes Pro. The notice concerns Gemini Apps personal accounts; it does not establish that the same change applies to work or school accounts.
When does the change take effect?
Free users
Google says changes for users without an AI subscription start taking effect on October 9, 2026. The notice does not say that every account changes at exactly the same moment that day.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
AI Plus subscribers
Google does not give Plus subscribers one universal date. It says each should receive an email explaining when the change will take effect for them. Check the Google account’s inbox, including spam or promotions folders, and review the plan details in the account if the timing is unclear.
What the change does—and does not—mean
It is not a shutdown of Gemini for free users. Flash-Lite remains listed for accounts without an AI plan, while the Pro model is absent from both the free and Plus rows. AI Plus retains Flash but not Pro in the post-change table. Pro and Ultra retain the listed Pro model.

- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
This matrix concerns model availability only. It does not say that paid users have unlimited access, or that every feature, usage limit or plan benefit is identical across tiers.
How Gemini usage limits fit into the decision
Google’s limits and upgrades help page describes usage limits as compute-based. The amount used depends on factors including prompt complexity, the models and features used, and chat length. Limits refresh every five hours until the weekly cap is reached; advanced models and demanding features use more of a limit. Google says limits can change and may be adjusted under capacity constraints.

| Tier | Usage limit stated by Google | Context-window capacity stated by Google |
|---|---|---|
| No plan | Standard limit | 32k tokens |
| AI Plus | 2x standard | 128k tokens |
| AI Pro | 4x standard | 1 million tokens |
| AI Ultra | 5x or 20x AI Pro limits, depending on subscription | 1 million tokens |
These are the limits and context-window figures on Google’s help page, accessed October 3, 2026; Google says they may change. A context window is the amount of text a model can handle in context, not a count of prompts. Google’s May 2026 announcement described the move from daily prompt limits to compute-based limits, with a five-hour refresh until the weekly limit. The October notice’s model table is the relevant source for which models each tier lists after the change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you change plans?
Choose based on the model or plan benefits you actually need, not simply because an access table changed. If you specifically need Pro, the post-change table lists it for AI Pro and AI Ultra, but not for free accounts or AI Plus. If Flash is sufficient, AI Plus still lists it; if Flash-Lite is sufficient, the free tier still lists it.
