Apple released the game-focused companion app as Apple Games in 2025. It is available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later, and brings game discovery, libraries, Apple Arcade, and Game Center social features together. Apple’s developer documentation says it is pre-installed on those operating systems; Apple also says it can be downloaded from the App Store.
What Apple Games does
Apple describes Games as a destination to find games, follow activity, and play with friends. Its main areas are Home, Friends, Arcade, Library, Search, and individual game pages. Rather than replacing the App Store, it adds a games-focused place to browse and manage games alongside Apple’s existing storefront.
Discover games and events
Home can feature recently played games, top charts, personalized recommendations, editorial selections, In-App Events, friend activity, and challenges. Search lets players find and download games and browse curated collections and charts. Individual game pages can highlight activity, updates, and events.
Keep track of games
Library gathers games previously downloaded on iPhone and iPad. On Mac, it can also include games downloaded from other platforms or services. Apple says every game on the iPhone and iPad App Store is available in Games; Mac’s broader library can include titles from other sources.

In-App Events and activity on game pages can surface timely updates and what friends are playing. Developers who implement Game Center features and In-App Events can gain additional discovery surfaces in Games and the App Store. The breadth of social and discovery features a player sees therefore depends partly on what individual game developers support.
Do you need a controller?
No. You can browse and launch games without one. Apple says any compatible game controller can be connected to navigate Games and launch games. A controller may be useful for games designed for it or for playing in landscape orientation, but compatibility depends on the controller, game, operating system, region, and device. Apple does not claim that every controller works with every game.

How the 2024 report changed
In October 2024, 9to5Mac reported that Apple was developing an App Store-like gaming app that would bring together store and Game Center functions. Bloomberg reported in May 2025 that a dedicated gaming app was planned for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Apple subsequently shipped the product as Apple Games in 2025. The reports described development plans; Apple’s current documentation describes the released app and its available features.
