The original Nintendo 3DS packs a glasses-free 3-D screen, a lower touchscreen, three cameras, motion sensors, dedicated memory and flash into a compact clamshell. Its battery can be replaced, but opening the back is only the easy part: the upper display and ribbon cables routed through the hinges make deeper repairs delicate.
What is inside the original Nintendo 3DS?
EE Times published its “Teardown slideshow: Inside the Nintendo 3DS” on March 29, 2011, based on teardown analysis by UBM TechInsights. The teardown identified a Sharp upper 3-D display, a Sharp lower touchscreen, three VGA cameras, and a 3.7 V, 1,300 mAh lithium-ion battery. UBM TechInsights technical marketing manager Allan Yogasingam described the design as “a traditional Nintendo handheld design.”
The two-screen clamshell also houses an infrared port, Circle Pad, gyroscope and accelerometer. iFixit identified an InvenSense ITG-3270 MEMS gyroscope and an STMicroelectronics LIS331DH accelerometer on the motherboard. The lower LCD measures 2.42 × 1.81 inches, has a resolution of 320 × 240 pixels, and displays 16.77 million colors.

UBM TechInsights separately reported two Fujitsu Semiconductor fast-cycle RAM (FCRAM) memories. iFixit’s chip list identifies a Fujitsu 128 MB FCRAM part; the sources describe their findings at different levels of detail.

Can you replace the original 3DS battery?
Yes. iFixit’s 2011 teardown lists a 3.7 V, 1,300 mAh battery rated at 5 Wh, and says it is easily swappable once the back cover is removed. Unlike DS models with a small battery door, the 3DS back cover comes off as one piece, so reaching the battery involves more disassembly.
For the original 3DS, iFixit reported battery life of 3–5 hours when playing 3DS software and 5–8 hours with original DS games, plus a 3.5-hour full-charge time. These are the figures reported in that 2011 repair documentation, not a guarantee of runtime from an aged battery or a current replacement.

How hard is it to take apart a 3DS?
iFixit rated the original 3DS 5 out of 10 for repairability in 2011. Replacing the battery is comparatively straightforward; reaching the upper display or working beyond the hinges is much harder. The guide identifies a Phillips #00 screwdriver and plastic opening tool as relevant tools for the teardown.
Where repairs become difficult
- Upper display access: Removing the upper display requires heating and prying with a heat gun and plastic opening tool to reach its screws.
- Hinge and cable routing: Further disassembly involves separating the hinges and threading ribbon cables through their hollow interiors.
- Fragile connectors: The top-display cables can be frustrating to remove without tearing and difficult to reseat. Most connectors are ZIF (zero-insertion-force) types, which need careful handling.
- Soldered ports: The headphone jack and charging connector are soldered to the motherboard, so replacing them requires soldering work rather than simply unplugging a modular part.
- Small parts: Numerous small components can be misplaced during disassembly.
Why are 3DS top-screen repairs difficult?
The upper screen is not reached by simply removing the back cover. Its screws sit behind a display assembly that must be loosened with heat and a plastic tool, and the display cables pass through the hinges. Those cables are delicate, and the hinge routing makes both removal and reassembly more demanding than a battery swap. If a repair requires separating the upper half, the cable path and connectors are the main risks to plan for.

Which 3DS model does this teardown cover?
The findings describe the original Nintendo 3DS teardown published in 2011. They should not be assumed to apply to the 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, or 2DS: those family revisions can differ in battery capacity, display and hinge construction, screw and connector access, replacement-part availability, and whether ports are modular or soldered.
