More than half of the Vision Pro-only apps in Appfigures’ early 2024 analysis charged an upfront price. That finding applies to apps made or adapted specifically for Apple Vision Pro—not every iPhone or iPad app that can run on the headset. The report also found that native Vision versions of existing apps relied much more heavily on subscriptions.
What “Vision Pro-only” means in the report
Appfigures’ analysis, published February 9, 2024, examined apps optimized for Apple Vision Pro. It included Vision-only apps as well as existing iPhone and iPad apps that had added a native Vision experience. It excluded roughly 1.2 million iOS apps that could work on the headset without developers modifying them. As a result, the headline figure describes a selected, purpose-built catalog—not the full range of software a Vision Pro owner might use.
How the two app groups made money
The report’s clearest contrast is between apps created just for Vision Pro and established iPhone or iPad apps with a native Vision version. Appfigures found that the first group was more likely to charge once up front, while the second leaned toward subscriptions.

Appfigures and TechCrunch agree on the 52% paid-download share, but give different figures for subscriptions among Vision-only apps: 8% in Appfigures’ own account and 13% in TechCrunch’s summary. Those figures should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. Appfigures also said 5% of apps across the wider App Store used paid downloads, putting the Vision-only share in context: upfront payment was much more common in that early Vision Pro catalog.

What paid Vision Pro apps cost
Upfront payment did not necessarily mean a high price for an individual app. Appfigures reported an average price of $5.67, said most paid apps cost $9.99 or less, and identified an interactive periodic table priced at $98 as the most expensive app in its analysis. The report calculated that buying every paid app in the catalog would cost $1,089.07. These are figures from the early 2024 dataset, not a current price list.

The total is useful as a measure of how a catalog can add up, but it is not a typical buyer’s expected spending: someone interested in a handful of apps would pay only for those selections. Subscriptions can create a different kind of cost, recurring over time, and were particularly common among existing apps that had added native Vision support.
Why developers charged upfront
Appfigures described upfront pricing as “simple and reliable,” while noting that it can make it difficult to build a sustainable business and may be the only viable option in some cases. A new platform can also create an opportunity for developers to reach early adopters. Vision Pro developer Michael Sayman told TechCrunch, “The window of opportunity here is nuts.” Juno developer Christian Selig told the publication that the app had “officially paid for the price of my Vision Pro.” Those comments illustrate developer perspectives; they do not establish that paid apps generally recoup development costs.

Does the paid-app share make Vision Pro worth buying?
Not by itself. The report answers a narrower question about early app-store monetization, not whether the headset is worthwhile for a particular person. Apple Vision Pro started at $3,499, as reported by TechCrunch in 2024; that hardware cost is far larger than the price of most individual apps in the Appfigures sample. A buyer should consider whether the specific apps and experiences they want are available, how many require a native Vision version, and whether any subscriptions fit their budget.
- If a few specialist apps matter most: check those apps’ current availability and price rather than assuming every Vision Pro app costs money.
- If you expect to use existing iPhone or iPad apps: the 52% figure does not describe that broader set, including unmodified iOS apps that were outside the analysis.
- If recurring costs concern you: distinguish one-time purchase prices from subscriptions, particularly when evaluating existing apps with native Vision support.
How current is the finding?
The percentages and prices describe an early launch-period snapshot from February 2024. App availability, pricing, catalog size, and discovery options may have changed since then. The analysis is best used to understand how developers initially monetized apps optimized for Vision Pro, not as a live count of what is paid in the current visionOS store.
