On April 1, 2019, Google marked Gmail’s 15th birthday by announcing broader Smart Compose availability, personalized writing suggestions, subject-line suggestions, and scheduled sending. The anniversary post also highlighted Dynamic Email, which lets people take certain actions inside a message. These are the announcements and rollout details Google published in 2019—not a guarantee that every setting or interface remains unchanged today.
What Google announced on Gmail’s 15th birthday
Gmail launched on April 1, 2004, with Google Search integrated into email, conversation threads, and 1 GB of free storage. Fifteen years later, Google said 1.5 billion people relied on Gmail daily. Tom Holman, Senior Product Manager for Gmail, wrote, “We may have launched Gmail on April Fools’ Day, but the last 15 years have been no joke.” (Google’s April 1, 2019 anniversary post.)
The announcements were about more than composing faster: Smart Compose was expanding to additional languages and mobile platforms, while Schedule send gave users control over when a message left their outbox. Google also described Dynamic Email, which brought interactive actions into messages.
How Smart Compose changed in 2019
Smart Compose uses AI to suggest text as a person writes an email. Google said it had already saved people from typing over 1 billion characters each week. In 2019, the company announced several expansions to the feature:

Does Smart Compose learn your writing style?
Google said personalized Smart Compose suggestions could adapt to a user’s writing style. The company stated that personalized suggestions were private to the individual account; administrators could control the capability for their domain, and users could opt out when it was enabled. Could Gmail suggest a subject line?
Yes. The 2019 subject-suggestion feature could offer a subject after a user composed the email body and moved to the subject line. Google said the Rapid Release rollout began April 4, 2019, and the Scheduled Release rollout began April 23, 2019. Those dates refer to the historical rollout, not current availability. How Schedule send worked
Schedule send let Gmail users choose a future date and time for delivery instead of sending immediately. Google presented it as a way to handle different time zones and respect recipients’ downtime. The 2019 announcement covered Gmail on the web, Android, and iOS.

- In Gmail, compose the message.
- Select the arrow next to Send, then choose Schedule send.
- Choose the date and time when the message should be sent.
- To find a queued message, open the Scheduled folder.
Google said the feature was on by default and available to all G Suite editions at the time. Its rollout began April 1, 2019, for Rapid Release domains and April 15, 2019, for Scheduled Release domains. What Dynamic Email added
Dynamic Email was Google’s term for messages that could remain interactive and current, allowing some tasks to happen without leaving Gmail. Examples in Google’s 2019 announcement included replying to or resolving Google Docs comments, RSVPing, filling out questionnaires, and browsing a catalog within the message. This was a separate workflow idea from Smart Compose: rather than helping write or time an email, it let recipients act on certain content inside it. (Google Workspace Updates on Dynamic Email.)
