Can you use a 120 Hz monitor with a PS4?
Yes. The PS4 connects to a display through HDMI: PlayStation’s setup instructions say to connect the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI port on the screen. A monitor’s refresh-rate rating describes what the monitor can display; it does not determine the signal the console sends.
Compatibility depends on whether the monitor accepts the PS4’s HDMI resolution and timing. Monitor specifications and manuals may list supported HDMI signals, so check those details for the particular screen rather than assuming every 120 Hz monitor accepts every PS4 output mode. Will a PS4 run games at 120 Hz on that monitor?
PlayStation’s published PS4 specifications do not establish 120 Hz output. Its 2013 FAQ lists HDMI video standards of 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. The FAQ also notes that frame rates up to 60 frames per second are possible on PS4 hardware; that general statement is not a guarantee that every game runs at 60 fps. A 120 Hz monitor may still work as the PS4’s display, but it cannot make the console send a 120 Hz signal. Do not buy one expecting it to raise PS4 gameplay to 120 Hz.
What changes with PS4 Pro?
PS4 Pro adds 4K output, not a documented 120 Hz mode. PlayStation’s 2016 FAQ describes 2160p output up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K display and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. For the 4K configuration, PlayStation’s setup guidance specifies a display that supports 4K/60 Hz. Check that the selected HDMI input and any devices in the HDMI chain support the required 4K mode, and select the correct input on the display. In either case, base the decision on the display’s accepted HDMI signals and your other intended uses, not on an expectation of 120 Hz PS4 gameplay.
