If your Google Home or Nest speaker won’t respond, first check its power and microphone mute switch, then see whether it detects “Hey Google.” That indicator helps distinguish a voice-detection problem from a request or Wi-Fi problem. Restart the speaker before changing network settings, and save a factory reset for last.

Start with power and the microphone

  • Check that the speaker is plugged into a working wall outlet and powered on. If it shows no lights or other sign of power, reseat the power connection and try another outlet.
  • Check that the microphone is on. The control’s location depends on the model. Google says orange lights indicate a muted microphone on the 2026 Google Home Speaker; Nest Audio, Nest Mini, first-generation Home Mini, Google Home, and Nest displays have model-specific microphone controls. Use the control for your device rather than assuming every speaker has the same switch or button. Google’s voice-response troubleshooting guide describes the controls and indicators.

Restart the speaker

Unplug the speaker’s power cable from its power source, wait a few seconds, then reconnect it. Allow it to start up and try “Hey Google” again. Restarting the speaker is a sensible next step before changing Wi-Fi settings.

Use the wake-word indicator to narrow down the problem

Say “Hey Google” and watch or listen for the device’s response. Many Google smart speakers use spinning or blinking LED dots when they hear the wake phrase. The 2026 Google Home Speaker uses a solid white light ring, while Nest displays show four colored dots. The indicator varies by model; check the device’s own behavior against Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

No indicator appears

Recheck that the microphone is not muted. If it is on and the speaker is powered, try speaking clearly from nearby and saying the phrase again. If the device still shows no response, consult the model-specific Google support guidance before attempting a reset.

The indicator appears, but the speaker does not answer usefully

The speaker has detected the wake phrase, so the issue may be the request itself or connectivity rather than the microphone. Try the command again, speak more slowly, or phrase it another way. You can also say, “Hey Google, repeat the question.” If it still cannot complete commands, check Wi-Fi next.

Check Wi-Fi when commands fail or the speaker seems offline

  1. Check the network with another device. Confirm that a phone or computer can connect to the home Wi-Fi. If other devices are offline too, the problem may be the network rather than the speaker.
  2. Verify the Wi-Fi password. If you are setting the speaker up again, make sure you are selecting the right network and entering its current password.
  3. Bring the speaker near the router while diagnosing setup. Google recommends keeping it within 4–6 m (15–20 ft) of the router during setup troubleshooting.
  4. Restart the router if the network itself is unavailable. After it comes back online, restart the speaker and try again.
  5. Consider a phone hotspot as an advanced test. Google suggests temporarily trying a phone hotspot, but hotspot support is not guaranteed. If the speaker connects to it, that indicates it can use Wi-Fi and points toward an issue with the home network; it does not by itself identify the precise cause.

For Google’s full Wi-Fi checks, see troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues with Google Nest or Home devices. If the Assistant answers questions, Google says the device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Set up the speaker again after a Wi-Fi change

If you changed your network name, password, or internet provider, the speaker may need setup again in the Google Home app. Follow Google’s instructions for reconnecting a Google Nest or Home device to Wi-Fi. A setup flow may also involve checking for a test sound; Google has separate guidance for a missing test sound during setup.

Factory reset only if other steps fail

A factory reset returns the device to its default settings. Google warns that it clears data from the device, disconnects it from home members, and cannot be undone. The button or touch procedure varies by model, so identify the exact speaker and follow its official instructions on Google’s speaker and display reset page rather than trying a generic sequence. For example, the listed procedure for Nest Audio and second-generation Nest Mini begins by switching the microphone off and then holding a specified area; the first-generation Home Mini has a reset button on its base.
