Yes: Apple says its Scary Fast event was filmed with an iPhone 15 Pro Max. But “shot on iPhone” identifies the camera used to capture the footage—not a bare phone, one-person shoot, or finished film with no post-production. Apple’s own account describes a professional crew using rigs, drones, lighting, synchronization tools, external storage, and color grading alongside the phone.

Was Apple’s Scary Fast event really shot on an iPhone?

Apple says the October 2023 Scary Fast presentation was filmed at night at Apple Park using iPhone 15 Pro Max for presenters, locations, and drone footage. Director Brian Oakes led the production. Apple’s account describes the iPhone as the central capture camera within a larger filmmaking workflow.

That distinction matters: “shot on iPhone” is a statement about the camera used to record the images. It does not mean that the final presentation was captured handheld, without accessories, or straight out of the camera. Apple quoted Oakes saying, “We were able to get the same complex shots with iPhone 15 Pro Max.” The production still used filmmaking techniques and equipment to execute those shots.

What equipment and workflow supported the iPhone?

Apple’s behind-the-scenes account describes a crew using professional production tools around the iPhone. The phone’s capabilities made it workable in that setting; the equipment and people shaped how the footage was captured and finished.

Apple iPhone 15, 128GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
  • Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
  • Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
  • Rigs and cages: Beastgrip cages and rigs supported the phones. A custom SpaceCam rig let the crew use an iPhone as the main camera while making complex camera moves.
  • Camera controls: The crew used the Blackmagic Camera app for digital-film-camera controls.
  • Synchronization: Tentacle Sync provided timecode synchronization across iPhones, Macs, and preview screens.
  • Additional production support: The shoot used lighting and drones, as well as traditional filming techniques.
  • Post-production: Footage was color graded and edited; the finished look was not simply an unaltered phone recording.

Apple quoted workflow specialist Jon Carr saying that professionals did not have to change the equipment or established practices they normally use. In other words, the iPhone could fit into a familiar production pipeline rather than replacing the rest of it.

Which iPhone 15 Pro features mattered for filmmaking?

Apple’s 2023 account points to recording formats, color handling, and data workflow—not just the phone’s lenses—as reasons the iPhone 15 Pro models could serve a production crew.

Capability What Apple documented Why it mattered in production
ProRes recording Capture up to 4K at 60 frames per second to an external drive. ProRes offered a production-oriented recording option, while recording to external storage helped accommodate the workflow’s data demands.
Apple Log Apple Log encoding was available to preserve detail for color grading. Log footage gives a colorist material to shape in post-production rather than baking in the final look at capture.
ACES support Apple described iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max as the first smartphones supporting the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES). ACES support connects the phone’s footage to a standardized color-management workflow.
USB-C data transfer Up to 10Gbps with a compatible USB 3 cable. Faster transfer supports moving large video files through a production workflow; the speed depends on using a compatible cable.

Apple quoted workflow specialist Jeff Wozniak describing ProRes recording to an external drive and Apple Log as the features that “supercharged” the iPhone 15 Pro Max workflow. These features help explain how a phone can be used within a professional pipeline; they do not by themselves create the lighting, camera movement, or final grade.

Does this prove an iPhone 15 Pro Max can replace a cinema camera?

No. Apple’s Scary Fast account shows that a skilled crew used iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture a polished production, but it is not a controlled comparison that isolates the phone’s image quality from lighting, lenses, rigs, operators, and post-production. Apple’s claim that the result can rival professional-camera work should be understood as its positioning in this production case study, not as a universal test result.

Whether the iPhone can replace another camera depends on the job. For a production that needs the specific lenses, handling, recording formats, accessories, or post-production pipeline of a cinema camera, the phone may be one camera in the toolkit rather than a substitute for all of it. The Scary Fast shoot demonstrates that iPhone 15 Pro Max can be integrated into complex work; it does not show that a phone alone will produce the same result.

Can you get the same cinematic look with your iPhone?

You can use some of the same principles, but matching a major Apple production requires more than enabling a setting. Plan the shot, control the light, stabilize or support the phone, and make deliberate choices about exposure and color. If your model and workflow support ProRes and Apple Log, those formats can provide more flexibility for editing and grading; they also require suitable storage and post-production tools.

For readers evaluating whether a phone-based setup suits their work, consider the whole system rather than the phone alone:

  • Capture: Check the supported formats and frame rates, including whether you need ProRes or 4K60.
  • Color: Decide whether an Apple Log and ACES-aware grading workflow is useful for the intended finish.
  • Storage and transfer: Plan for external storage and a compatible USB 3 cable when recording or moving large files.
  • Coverage and movement: Consider lens reach and stabilization, and whether a cage, rig, or drone is needed for the shots.
  • Finishing: Account for the time and skills required to color grade and edit the footage.

Apple’s 2023 campaign also included an Olivia Rodrigo “get him back!!” promotion reported as using iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max features, including 4K ProRes at 60 fps and 5× optical zoom. Like Scary Fast, a promotional production demonstrates a particular creative use of the phones; it does not establish what every user will achieve in different conditions.
