NASA’s Orion spacecraft streaked through Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 11, 2022, ending the uncrewed Artemis I lunar flight test. The fiery glow was plasma around the capsule—not the spacecraft burning up—and the return put Orion’s heat shield to a crucial in-flight test.
What NASA’s Orion reentry video shows
The video captures Orion’s return from its trip around the Moon: the capsule encounters the atmosphere at extreme speed, glows as surrounding air becomes plasma, deploys parachutes and descends to a Pacific splashdown. NASA treated the return as a core Artemis I objective because it tested the spacecraft’s thermal protection during an actual lunar-return trajectory. NASA’s Artemis I return report
Why Orion looks like a fireball
Orion returned at about 25,000 mph, according to NASA. At that speed, compression and heating of the air around the capsule produce plasma, which creates the bright glow. NASA says the plasma also briefly disrupted communications during reentry. The visible fireball is therefore a sign of the extreme atmospheric conditions around the vehicle, not evidence that the capsule itself caught fire. How hot was Orion’s return?
NASA reported that the heating reached nearly 5,000°F during the Artemis I return. Orion’s Avcoat heat shield was designed to face roughly that temperature on its front surface while keeping the back side at about 200°F; NASA described the shield as one to three inches thick. These are design and mission figures NASA reported, not a measurement of every point on the capsule. NASA Ames on Orion thermal-protection testing

How the heat shield is supposed to work
Orion’s Avcoat shield is ablative. Its outer material chars and burns away in a controlled process, carrying heat away rather than allowing it to pass into the crew module. NASA said it had conducted more than 1,000 arc-jet tests of Orion thermal-protection materials before Artemis I. NASA Ames deputy system manager for Orion’s thermal protection system Jeremy Vander Kam described the expected challenge this way: “Orion will come blazing through Earth’s atmosphere at temperatures twice as hot as molten lava.” NASA Ames on Orion thermal-protection testing
Why Orion used a skip entry
Orion’s return was not a single plunge straight down. Its planned sequence began with separation of the crew module, followed by skip entry: the capsule dipped into the atmosphere, lifted back out briefly, then reentered. This profile helped manage the return before parachute descent. The atmosphere slowed Orion substantially; drogue and main parachutes then reduced its speed for the ocean landing. Plasma during the atmospheric portion caused a short communications blackout. NASA’s explanation of Orion’s heat shield and reentry

Did Orion’s heat shield work?
It protected the capsule sufficiently for the Artemis I return, but inspection and later analysis found unexpected damage. NASA’s investigation concluded that gases generated within portions of the Avcoat could not vent and dissipate as expected. Pressure built up, cracking the material and releasing pieces of char. NASA said flight data indicated the crew would have been safe: cabin temperatures remained steady in the mid-70s Fahrenheit. The findings exposed a performance issue to address, rather than evidence that the capsule’s interior had become dangerously hot. NASA’s findings on Orion heat-shield char loss
NASA said operational changes could support Artemis II using the current heat shield. That statement describes NASA’s planned approach at the time of its report; it is not a claim that every later mission outcome is established by the Artemis I video.
