Microsoft’s redesigned work Copilot brings together a starting hub called Home, a natural-language app builder called Code, and a persistent background agent called Autopilot. They are not all generally available: as of October 3, 2026, Microsoft lists Home and Code in its Frontier early-access program and Autopilot in Private Preview. Microsoft also says Cowork, Code, and Autopilot use usage-based billing, so access and cost depend on more than having a Copilot subscription.
What are Home, Code, and Autopilot?
Microsoft announced the new work Copilot on September 25, 2026, as a combination of capabilities for different kinds of work. Home is the entry point; Code is for building apps and workflows from a description; and Autopilot is designed to continue assigned work in the background. Home also brings together Chat and Cowork, Microsoft’s modes for conversational assistance and delegated multi-step tasks. These descriptions come from Microsoft, not independent testing. What does Copilot Home do?
Home is intended to show recent activity, suggested actions, and work that is not finished. From there, Microsoft says users can ask Chat for a quick answer, lookup, or draft, or use Cowork to delegate a longer task intended to produce a deliverable. Its examples include an RFP response, a launch kit, a customer briefing, and a financial-close package.
Microsoft says Home can also create or update Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations. The files are described as editable and synchronized with the corresponding Office apps, so a user can refine them alongside the Copilot conversation and share them with colleagues. That is Microsoft’s stated behavior; the announcement is not an independent verification of how it works in practice. Microsoft Source EMEA summary

Automatic routing between Chat, Cowork, and Code was described as coming, not as a capability already generally available. Microsoft also described Today in Home and @Copilot in Teams as upcoming preview experiences.
What can Copilot Code build?
Code is intended to turn a natural-language description into an app, tracker, dashboard, automation, or workflow. Microsoft examples include desktop widgets, interactive dashboards, and cloud-hosted internal apps. The company says Code selects an approach and builds the requested solution, uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, and runs in a sandboxed environment. It also says solutions can be hosted within a customer’s tenant.
These are Microsoft’s announced capabilities, not a guarantee that any particular request will produce a working or production-ready result. The announcement does not specify all feature entitlements by geography, plan configuration, or tenant; organizations should check their own access and current terms. Microsoft said Code would be in preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later in 2026, while its product page currently lists Code as available through Frontier. The announcement does not establish that every Premium or Pro subscriber can use it. Microsoft Copilot product page

What does Autopilot do in the background?
Previously called Scout, Autopilot is described by Microsoft as a digital teammate that can be assigned a name, role, and goal. It is meant to watch channels, follow up on threads, handle recurring work, and resume projects without requiring a new prompt for each step. Microsoft’s example is a supplier-review process spanning scheduling, preparation, meetings, and follow-ups.
Microsoft says Autopilot is cloud-hosted and has its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace in an organization’s tenant, with permissions, audit, and governance applying. Those are product and control claims from Microsoft, not independent confirmation of security, reliability, or autonomous performance. The company describes it as continuing work while a user is away; that should not be read as a guarantee that tasks complete correctly without oversight.
Who can access the new Copilot features?
In its September 25 announcement, Microsoft said Home and Code would begin rolling out to its Frontier program in the coming weeks and Autopilot would expand to Private Preview at September’s end. On October 3, Microsoft’s product page listed Home and Code as available in Frontier and Autopilot as available in Private Preview. Both are early-access stages, not general availability to every Copilot customer.

How do the capabilities differ?
| Capability | Best fit | What Microsoft says it does | Access listed October 3, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat in Home | Immediate help | Answers questions, looks things up, and drafts conversationally. | Home is listed in Frontier; specific account eligibility is not stated. |
| Cowork in Home | Delegating a multi-step deliverable | Works toward outputs such as a briefing, launch kit, or close package. | Specific access stage and eligibility are not stated on the product page cited here; Microsoft says usage-based billing applies. |
| Code | Creating an app, dashboard, tracker, automation, or workflow | Builds from natural-language descriptions; Microsoft says it uses a sandbox and can host within a customer’s tenant. | Frontier. |
| Autopilot | Recurring or continuing work that can run in the background | Can follow channels and threads and resume assigned projects, according to Microsoft. | Private Preview. |
These categories describe intended task shapes, not a promise that the tools can be used interchangeably. Microsoft’s announcement says automatic routing among Chat, Cowork, and Code is coming.
What work context and controls does Microsoft describe?
Microsoft says Copilot is grounded in Microsoft IQ, and that Fabric IQ can bring context from Power BI semantic models into Copilot. The announcement cites “20+ million semantic models in Power BI” as Microsoft’s 2026 figure. That is a statement about the scale of the context Microsoft says is available, not an independent measure of answer accuracy or how often a model will be relevant to a user.

Microsoft also said Dynamics 365 and Power Platform data and workflows were planned to enter public preview over the following month after the September 25 announcement. A plugin registry is intended to bring Microsoft, partner, and custom-built plugins together under centralized IT approval and management. Those are announced plans and product descriptions, not proof of current availability in every tenant.
How are subscription licensing and usage-based billing different?
Microsoft says a user subscription license (USL) covers ordinary Copilot use in Chat and across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, along with model selection and new capabilities. Its announcement says usage-based billing (UBB) applies to Cowork, Code, Autopilot, and certain frontier models.
The announcement gives no UBB rates, and the cited material does not settle entitlements by SKU, region, or tenant. The broad individual, business, and enterprise plan listings on Microsoft’s product page are not, by themselves, evidence that a specific preview feature is included. Confirm current plan and billing terms with Microsoft or your organization’s administrator before estimating cost.
