Apple Pay went live in India on 30 September 2026, letting customers add eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards to a compatible iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. It supports contactless payments in stores and checkout in participating apps and websites. This launch does not establish support for every Indian bank card or for UPI.
What Apple Pay’s India launch includes
Apple’s 30 September 2026 announcement names Axis Bank as its first Indian issuer. Apple’s India eligibility page lists Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards; it says the list will be updated as more banks are added. Eligibility can vary by card type, so check with Axis Bank about your specific card before relying on it.

Apple describes card payments in three settings: at a store’s contactless reader, in an app, or on a website that offers Apple Pay at checkout. The launch materials do not announce UPI support, and the card-based service should not be treated as a substitute for UPI. Apple’s launch announcement and India card eligibility page provide the current details.

How to pay in stores, apps and online
In a store
At a contactless reader, double-click the iPhone’s side button or Home button, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode if prompted, then hold the top of the iPhone near the reader. With Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the watch display near the reader.
In an app or on a website
Select Apple Pay at checkout when the merchant offers it, then authenticate as prompted. Availability depends on that particular app or website supporting Apple Pay; having an eligible card in Wallet does not make every checkout compatible.

Where can you use Apple Pay?
In person, the shop needs a contactless payment terminal. Online, the app or website must offer Apple Pay checkout. Apple lists Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato as launch examples—not a complete merchant directory or a promise that every outlet accepts Apple Pay.
Apple says it worked with payment service providers including BillDesk, Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay and Worldline to reach merchant networks. Acceptance still depends on the merchant’s terminal or checkout configuration. Apple’s India Apple Pay page describes where and how the service works.

Security, privacy and connectivity
Apple says a card number is not stored on the device or Apple servers and is not shared with merchants. Instead, Apple describes a unique Device Account Number, encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element. Apple also says it does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user, and that Find My can lock or suspend payments from a lost iPhone. These are Apple’s descriptions of its product, not an independent audit or a guarantee against every form of fraud. Details are on Apple’s Apple Pay privacy page.
For in-store iPhone and Apple Watch payments, Apple says Wi-Fi or cellular service is not required at the moment of payment because the device communicates with the terminal over NFC. Transaction history may not show until the device reconnects. Apple’s service page also says Apple charges no Apple Pay transaction fee; your card issuer may still apply its usual charges. Axis Bank says its card rewards and benefits continue when an eligible card is used through Apple Pay.

Fees, rewards and what the launch figures mean
Apple says it does not charge a fee for using Apple Pay, but normal issuer charges may apply. Axis Bank says eligible cards retain their card rewards and benefits; check the terms of your particular card for the applicable rules. Apple and Axis describe fees and benefits in their service information and launch notice.
Apple’s 2026 global figures say Apple Pay was available in more than 90 countries and regions and that it worked with more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide. Those numbers are global, not India-specific adoption or transaction figures; Apple’s launch materials do not state an India user or transaction total. Apple’s global newsroom announcement gives the figures.
