On a current Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet in the U.S., enable Google’s speech engine at Settings > General management > Text-to-speech. Choose Preferred engine > Google, install the voice data you need, then adjust language, speech rate, and pitch. This sets the system speech engine that compatible apps and accessibility features use to turn text into spoken audio.
Enable Google Text-to-Speech in Samsung Settings
Samsung’s current U.S. menu path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Text-to-speech.
- Open Preferred engine and select Google.
The same screen may list Samsung’s speech engine as another choice. The available engines and wording can vary with your Galaxy’s One UI/Android version and region. If you do not see the menu, use the Settings search field and search for text-to-speech or TTS.
Install a Google voice or language
A language does not appear as a usable voice until its voice data is installed on the device.
- Return to Settings > General management > Text-to-speech.
- Tap the settings icon beside Preferred engine.
- Tap Install voice data.
- Choose Google.
- Tap the language you want, then tap its download icon.
After the download finishes, return to the Text-to-speech panel and select that language. The list of available languages depends on the voice data installed on your phone; it is not a fixed list shared by every Galaxy model or region.

Preview and adjust the spoken voice
Samsung’s Text-to-speech panel provides these controls:
- Language: selects the installed language used for speech.
- Speech rate: makes the voice slower or faster.
- Pitch: changes how high or low the voice sounds.
- Play: previews the current settings.
- Reset: restores the panel’s default settings.
Tap Play after changing the rate or pitch so you can compare the result before leaving Settings. If a language is missing, install its Google voice data first rather than trying to select it from the main language list.

Make Samsung read text aloud
Changing the engine only supplies the speech system. The app or accessibility feature still determines what content is spoken. For ordinary app functions, a compatible app sends text to Android’s text-to-speech system and Google’s selected voice plays it aloud.
For a deliberate, on-demand reading of visible content, use Select to Speak:

Google Text-to-Speech, TalkBack, and Select to Speak compared
These features are related but solve different problems. Samsung describes Text-to-speech as the speech system itself and notes that TalkBack uses that same built-in system while serving a different accessibility purpose.

Google is not listed as an engine
Check the Preferred engine menu inside the Text-to-speech panel. If the choices differ from Samsung’s current U.S. instructions, your model, software build, or region may expose a different set of engines.
A language does not appear
Open the Google engine settings, choose Install voice data, select the language, and tap its download icon. Only installed language data can be selected for playback.
Select to Speak is missing
Open Settings > Accessibility and look for Select to Speak. If it is absent, install the latest Android Accessibility Suite, then check the accessibility list again.
The voice sounds too fast, slow, high, or low
Return to Settings > General management > Text-to-speech, change Speech rate or Pitch, and tap Play to preview the adjustment.
Quick Recap
Compatibility considerations
- Menu names and engine availability depend on the Galaxy’s Android/One UI software and region.
- Google voice choices depend on which language packs and voice data are installed.
- Apps must support Android’s text-to-speech output for the selected Google voice to be used.
- TalkBack and Select to Speak are accessibility features, not alternate names for the Text-to-speech settings panel.
