The launch was not secret; the debate centered on how a polished demonstration presented the model’s interaction with images and how Google later explained that the demo had been made. Gemini was a multimodal model family, but the video did not show one continuous, live voice-and-video exchange.
What Google announced about Gemini
Google introduced Gemini 1.0 as a model family designed to work across text, code, audio, images, and video. It announced three model sizes—Ultra, Pro, and Nano—and described access rolling out in stages through Google products and developer services. These were Google’s launch statements, not independent verification of every capability or performance claim. Google’s December 6, 2023 announcement set out the launch details.
What the benchmark figure means
Google said Gemini Ultra exceeded then-current state-of-the-art performance on 30 of 32 academic benchmarks. That is Google’s reported result from 2023, not an unqualified independent finding. Benchmark results depend on the tests and evaluation methods used, so the figure should not be read as proof that Gemini was broadly better at every task.
Was the Gemini demo real-time?
No: the launch video did not document a continuous, live spoken exchange in which Gemini watched a person and responded to the scene as it unfolded. Google’s developers later explained that they prompted Gemini with sequences of still images and text. The final video was edited. Google’s explanation of the demo’s prompting method describes that process.

What viewers saw—and what the method was
The video showed a person handling objects and drawing while interacting with Gemini, which could give viewers the impression of fluid, real-time voice-and-video responsiveness. The method Google described was different: the model received image sequences and text prompts, and the finished presentation was edited.
That distinction matters for judging what the video demonstrated. It is not accurate to call the model or all its outputs fake: Google said the demo used real Gemini outputs. But the video should not be treated as evidence of the exact live interaction it appeared to portray, either. It documented a prompted and edited demonstration, not a continuous live test.
Rank #2
Why the presentation sparked a debate
The central issue was the gap between the demo’s apparent immediacy and the interaction method Google later described. A viewer could reasonably infer that Gemini was responding to a live scene in real time; the disclosed use of still images and text prompts changes that interpretation. Explaining the method allows a more precise assessment than a simple “real” or “fake” label.
The launch’s broader capability claims and the demo’s presentation are also distinct questions. The video does not establish that Gemini could not perform multimodal tasks; it shows a particular interaction constructed through prompts and editing. Likewise, Google’s benchmark figure is a separate company-reported claim, not validation of the video’s apparent real-time setup.
A separate controversy: Gemini image generation in 2024
In February 2024, Google paused image generation of people after the feature produced historically inaccurate or offensive depictions. The Associated Press reported that Google senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan said, “It’s clear that this feature missed the mark.” The Associated Press’s February 23, 2024 report covers Google’s response and apology.
This was a separate incident involving a specific image-generation feature and rollout. It added to public scrutiny of Gemini’s reliability and safeguards, but it does not demonstrate that every Gemini response was defective or that the 2023 demo was produced the same way.
