Support depends on what you mean by “AGEIA PhysX.” NVIDIA still provides a legacy installer so some older PhysX games can find the runtime they need, but that is different from supporting an original AGEIA PhysX card (PPU). NVIDIA documents AGEIA PPU acceleration only for PhysX SDK 2.8.1 or earlier on Windows Vista or Windows XP—not on current Windows systems.
Does AGEIA PhysX still have support?
There are two separate compatibility questions: whether an older game can launch with the required PhysX runtime, and whether an original AGEIA PPU can accelerate that game. NVIDIA’s current PhysX System Software page lists version 9.23.1019, dated May 23, 2024, and says the package includes current PhysX runtime builds and security updates. It also points to a legacy installer for older games.
That current software page does not establish support for AGEIA hardware on modern Windows. NVIDIA’s older release notes set a much narrower boundary for PPU acceleration: SDK 2.8.1 or earlier, and Windows Vista or Windows XP. The distinction matters if your goal is specifically to use a vintage AGEIA card rather than simply get an old game running.
Do old PhysX games need the legacy installer?
Some do. NVIDIA says games using PhysX SDK versions before 2.7.1 also need the PhysX Legacy Installer. Its examples include Cell Factor, Clive Barker’s Jericho, Gears of War, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Switch Ball, and Velvet Assassin. These examples identify games for which the older runtime may be needed; they do not mean that each game requires an AGEIA PPU.

Start with the game’s runtime requirement and the result you want. If the game only needs to launch, the relevant issue is whether the required software runtime is installed. If you want hardware acceleration, you must also check whether the hardware and operating system are within NVIDIA’s documented support boundary.
Can I still use an AGEIA PhysX card?
NVIDIA’s 9.14.0702 release notes state: “AGEIA PPU acceleration support for 2.8.1 SDK or earlier, and Windows Vista and Windows XP only.” The note also advises AGEIA processor users to use older system software, such as version 8.09.04. Installing the contemporary GeForce PhysX package should not be treated as a way to restore PPU acceleration on a modern Windows installation.

The historical transition helps explain the split. NVIDIA’s 2008 Release 178.24 notes document PhysX acceleration on GeForce 8-, 9-, and 200-series GPUs and include PhysX System Software 8.09.04. That records GeForce GPU acceleration entering NVIDIA’s driver software; it does not prove that every AGEIA PPU stopped working at that point. NVIDIA’s 2011 timeline places AGEIA PPU availability in 2007, the acquisition of AGEIA in 2008, and the AGEIA PhysX SDK generation at versions 2.0 through 2.8.1.
For a vintage-hardware restoration, treat an AGEIA PhysX card as legacy hardware with narrow, documented OS compatibility. NVIDIA’s material does not establish PPU support on current Windows, nor does it specify present-day card availability, condition, or replacement-part compatibility.

Which path should I try?
- Identify the game and its PhysX generation. Check the game’s documentation or support information for its SDK/runtime requirement. NVIDIA specifically calls for the Legacy Installer with games using SDK versions before 2.7.1.
- Decide whether you need the game to run or the PPU to accelerate it. For launching, investigate the runtime requirement. For AGEIA acceleration, the game must use SDK 2.8.1 or earlier and the documented operating system must be Windows Vista or Windows XP.
- Install only the runtime that matches the game’s need. The current PhysX System Software page identifies the Legacy Installer for older games; do not assume the current GeForce-oriented package gives an AGEIA card support on a newer OS.
- Set expectations before troubleshooting the card. NVIDIA’s cited PPU note does not document support beyond Windows Vista or XP. If your system runs a newer Windows version, the available NVIDIA documentation does not provide a supported PPU route.
What NVIDIA’s historical game count means
In a 2011 PhysX 3 presentation, NVIDIA Corporation described the team’s experience behind the rewrite as covering “200+ game titles.” That is a historical claim about titles supported by the PhysX team, not a count of games that work with AGEIA PPUs or a current compatibility list.
