Roofing companies can use Google Ads more effectively by measuring qualified opportunities and sold work—not just clicks, calls, or form fills. Use Local Services Ads for verified local placement billed per valid lead, where available and eligible; use standard Search campaigns when you need more control over queries, landing pages, offers, and budgets. Then organize campaigns around the roofing jobs you actually perform and feed lead outcomes back into your optimization.

Choose the ad product that fits the job

Google lists roofing among the home-service categories eligible for Local Services Ads in the United States. Eligibility and availability depend on the market and business requirements, so confirm that roofing and your service area are supported before planning around the format.

Decision point Local Services Ads Standard Search campaigns
How charges work Pay per valid lead. Google describes an average weekly budget and monthly maximum; lead prices vary by location, job type, lead type, and bidding mode. Typically pay per click. Evaluate clicks against qualified leads and downstream outcomes rather than treating a click as a lead.
Best suited to Local placement for an eligible, verified business seeking contact from nearby prospective customers. Control over service-specific queries, ad messaging, landing pages, offers, schedules, and geographic segmentation.
Business setup Check categories, service area, hours, licenses, insurance, and profile completeness against current market requirements. Build campaigns and ad groups around service and economic objectives, with relevant ads and landing pages.
Lead evaluation Review valid leads, feedback, and any available credits; compare spend with accepted leads and booked inspections. Review search terms and connect calls, forms, and offline sales outcomes to campaign performance.

These formats can serve different purposes rather than being mutually exclusive. If both are available, compare them using accepted leads, booked inspections, close rate, revenue per lead, and response time—not raw contact volume alone. LSA lead costs vary by market and job, and Google does not publish a universal roofing cost-per-lead benchmark.

Define what counts as a good lead

Before launching, agree with the people answering inquiries on which actions sales should accept and which outcomes the business can verify. Google defines a conversion as an ad interaction leading to a valuable action, such as a call or purchase. For a roofer, useful primary outcomes may include a qualified phone conversation, an inspection booked within the service area, an estimate request for a job the company performs, or a sold job recorded in a CRM or call system.

  • Make qualified conversations, booked inspections, and verified sold jobs primary optimization signals when you can measure them reliably.
  • Keep low-intent activity, such as a page view, out of the primary goal used to guide bidding unless it genuinely represents business value.
  • Track website, phone, and offline outcomes as distinct conversion actions so you can see where inquiries came from and what happened next.

A form submission or call is not automatically a qualified lead. Record service requested, location, qualification status, inspection booking, estimate, and sale value so campaign decisions reflect business results.

Build campaigns around roofing service intent

Separate themes that represent different services, urgency, and customer needs. One broad “roofing” campaign can blur differences between an urgent leak repair and a planned replacement, making it harder to align the ad, destination page, and budget with the inquiry.

  • Repair and emergency response: roof repair, roof leak repair, and urgent response searches.
  • Replacement: roof replacement and reroofing.
  • Storm damage: storm damage roof repair and inspection-related searches. Do not promise an insurance claim outcome.
  • Commercial work: commercial roofing and flat-roof services, if offered.
  • Inspection and maintenance: roof inspection and recurring maintenance, if offered.
  • Brand and location: searches for the company name and the places it serves.

Use Keyword Planner to discover terms, then review the actual search terms that triggered ads. Google supports broad, phrase, and exact match types. Broad match uses contextual signals, so assess it against qualified-conversion data and maintain exclusions; do not assume a keyword’s nominal match type guarantees only closely worded searches.

Exclude work you cannot turn into a job

Add negative keywords for irrelevant demand: services you do not provide, employment and training searches, DIY research, requests for free materials, and places outside your service area. Review exclusions as the search-term mix changes so a negative does not block a useful service inquiry.

Make the ad and landing page agree

For each service theme, make the ad, keyword intent, destination page, service area, offer, and next step consistent. A person searching for emergency leak repair should land on a page about that repair—not a generic page that makes them search again for the relevant service. Close alignment supports relevance and gives the visitor a clearer path to contact.

Write a credible, specific ad

Use responsive search ads with multiple headlines and descriptions. Include the service and location, a genuine proof point, and a response-time promise only if the business can consistently meet it. Mention financing or warranty terms only when they are actually offered and clearly applicable. Give the visitor one obvious next step, such as calling or requesting an inspection.

Give each service its own useful destination

The landing page should repeat the service and coverage area, establish relevant proof, and make the phone or form action easy to find. Ask only qualification questions the team will use—such as job type and property location—and explain what happens after submission. This helps screen out work the company does not serve without obscuring the contact path.

Use an in-ad lead form selectively

A Google lead-form asset can be useful when the team can respond promptly and has a consistent qualification process. Google offers optimization for “more qualified” submissions, which adds steps and generally trades volume for stronger interest, and “more volume.” Choose based on sales capacity: favor qualification when low-quality inquiries consume scarce follow-up time; choose volume only when staff can screen and pursue the additional submissions efficiently.

Track calls through to inspections and sales

Call volume alone can reward campaigns that generate short, irrelevant, duplicate, or out-of-area calls. Enable call reporting, then set any minimum useful call duration only after reviewing real conversations; a duration threshold is a screening aid, not proof that a call was qualified.

  1. Record the call outcome: service requested, location, qualified or unqualified, inspection booked, estimate issued, and sale value where known.
  2. Connect qualified and sold outcomes to the relevant ad activity by importing call or offline conversion data where your systems support it.
  3. Compare campaigns on downstream results, not on the number of calls they generated.

Google identifies imported call conversions as its most precise way to measure which calls lead to sales and other valuable actions. Website call conversions can measure calls for up to 60 days after the initial ad click; that is a platform measurement window, not a guarantee that every call or later sale will be attributed.

Close the loop on lead handling

Even well-targeted ads waste budget when inquiries go unanswered or nobody records what happened. Assign calls and forms to a monitored owner, make advertised hours match actual coverage, and use consistent outcome labels for invalid, duplicate, out-of-area, and non-service inquiries.

For Local Services Ads, review lead feedback and credits where available. Google says leads may be reassessed and invalid or low-quality leads can receive credits in eligible markets; do not assume every disputed lead will be credited. For reporting, lead records can include fields such as lead type, status, creation date, and charge or feedback status.

Use a weekly review to move budget toward better opportunities

Review each service and geography using a small set of measures that connect ad spend to sales capacity:

  • Spend and Search impression share, or LSA coverage where applicable.
  • Qualified-lead rate and booked-inspection rate.
  • Close rate and revenue per lead.
  • Time to first response.

Inspect search terms and negatives, pause messages that are attracting the wrong job type, and shift budget toward service-and-location combinations that produce accepted opportunities. No single roofing cost per lead, conversion rate, or return on ad spend applies across markets: costs and results vary with location, season, service mix, competition, and follow-up execution.

The Bottom Line

Build Google Ads around the roofing work you want, and make qualified inspections and sold jobs—not raw clicks—the measures that guide spend.
