Apple says it will add controls to macOS Full Disk Access, a permission that can let an app reach data normally protected by macOS privacy boundaries. The company says users who want to grant that level of access will have to take “very explicit user action.”

Apple announced the change in a Developer News post dated October 2, 2026. It has not yet disclosed the macOS release, consent screen, entitlement, migration behavior, or rollout date.

What Apple is changing in Full Disk Access

Full Disk Access was created so software such as backup utilities could work with data that ordinary macOS permissions restrict. Apple now says some developers are using the permission in ways that can expose files, mail, messages and browsing history without users fully understanding the consequences.

Apple’s stated change is not a replacement for Full Disk Access. Instead, it plans “additional controls” so that granting this unusually broad permission requires a deliberate confirmation. Apple’s exact wording is: “Going forward, we will introduce additional controls to ensure that users who genuinely wish to grant an app this extraordinary level of access can only do so with very explicit user action.”

The announcement describes a policy direction, not a finished feature. Apple has not said whether the control will be a new warning, a second confirmation, an entitlement requirement, a time limit, an administrative policy, or another mechanism.

What Full Disk Access can expose

An app with Full Disk Access can bypass ordinary macOS privacy boundaries. Apple specifically identifies four categories of potentially exposed information:

  • Files stored on the Mac
  • Email and mail databases
  • Messages
  • Browsing history

The permission does not prove that an app has read every category, nor that it has handled data improperly. It means the operating system may allow access that would otherwise be blocked, depending on the app’s behavior and the data it targets.

Why AI agents make the permission more consequential

Traditional applications usually request sensitive access for a defined task, such as indexing, backup or security scanning. Desktop AI agents are designed to work across applications and data, sometimes continuously or semi-autonomously. That combination can make a broad permission more consequential than it was for a narrowly focused utility.

Persistent and autonomous operation

An agent that remains active can encounter sensitive information while carrying out unrelated instructions. An autonomous workflow may also decide which files or applications to inspect, rather than waiting for a user to open each item manually.

Cross-application reach

When an agent can work across files, mail, messages and browser data, information from separate parts of a person’s digital life can be combined. The risk is not limited to one document or one application.

Apple’s warning is broader than one incident

Apple says, “As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially.” Reporting about the announcement has cited Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots as examples of desktop agents prompting concern. TechCrunch also reported that the announcement followed a disputed claim that Meta’s Muse knew the contents of private messages. Apple did not say that every AI agent has accessed private data improperly, and its statement is framed as a general warning about the direction of the technology.

What is confirmed—and what is still unknown

Question What Apple has established What has not been disclosed
Purpose To make granting Full Disk Access require very explicit user action. The exact confirmation or policy design.
Data at stake Files, mail, messages and browsing history may be exposed to an app with the permission. Whether the new controls will vary by data category.
AI rationale Apple links the change to increasingly capable and autonomous AI agents. A finding that all, or any named, agent misused the permission.
Timing Apple announced the plan on October 2, 2026. The macOS version, release date, rollout schedule and treatment of apps that already have access.
Administration Apple says additional controls are coming. Whether organizations will receive new mobile-device-management settings or reporting.

Both 9to5Mac and TechCrunch reported that Apple provided no implementation timetable or detailed mechanics in the announcement.

What Mac users should do now

Until Apple publishes the mechanics, treat Full Disk Access as a high-impact permission rather than a routine setup checkbox. Apple’s announcement does not provide a new step-by-step procedure, but you can review the apps that currently hold the permission.

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Open Full Disk Access.
  4. Review every enabled app and ask why it needs access to data across the Mac.
  5. Turn off access for software you no longer use or whose purpose you cannot clearly explain.
  6. Before enabling an AI agent, check what tasks it performs, whether it stays active, what data it sends to a provider, how long logs are retained and how access can be revoked.

Removing access can prevent a feature from working, particularly for backup, synchronization, indexing or security tools. If you disable a permission, verify the app’s documented behavior before relying on it for a backup or other critical job.

How to evaluate an AI agent that requests broad access

Use the permission request as a security decision, not as proof that the software is unsafe. These questions help separate a justified request from an unnecessarily broad one:

  • Scope: Does the task genuinely require files, mail, messages and browser history, or would a narrower integration work?
  • Initiation: Does access occur only after you start a task, or can the agent act continuously in the background?
  • Consent: Does the prompt identify the data involved and explain the consequences in plain language?
  • Revocation: Can you disable access immediately in System Settings, and does the vendor explain what happens to data already collected?
  • Processing: Does the vendor disclose logging, retention, model-training use and third-party processing?
  • Management: On a work Mac, can an administrator control or audit the permission?

A clear purpose and transparent controls do not eliminate risk, but they make an informed decision possible. An agent that cannot explain why it needs broad access deserves extra scrutiny.

When will the tighter controls arrive?

There is no announced arrival date. Apple has not named the macOS release that will contain the change, said whether existing approvals will expire or require reconfirmation, or described how older applications will behave.

For now, the practical status is unchanged: Full Disk Access remains a permission that users manage in macOS, while Apple develops a stricter consent model. The next reliable details should come from Apple’s release notes, developer documentation or an updated macOS privacy interface.
