WPForms Lite emphasizes templates and a guided builder; Contact Form 7 offers an open-source, modular approach; Forminator includes extras such as polls and quizzes; and other options differ in conditional logic, entry handling, and how they sell advanced features. Compare the free-tier boundaries—not just the feature lists—before choosing.
The feature descriptions below come from plugin listings and the Ninja Forms site reviewed on September 30, 2026. They are product-published claims, not hands-on test results. Features and plan boundaries can change, so check the current listing before installing.
How to choose a free WordPress contact form plugin
Start with the form you actually need, then verify that every required part is included at no cost. “Free” may mean a complete basic form, a free version with paid upgrades, or a free core that relies on separately sold add-ons.
- Building and layout: Decide whether you want a visual drag-and-drop builder, templates, or a more modular configuration style. Check whether multi-page forms cost extra.
- Fields and logic: List the inputs and validation rules you need. Confirm conditional logic and file uploads are available in the free release if your form depends on them.
- Spam controls: Review what protection is included and whether it depends on an external service.
- Submissions: Find out whether entries are stored, searchable, editable, or exportable, and where the data resides. Email notifications alone are not the same as an entry archive.
- Notifications and integrations: Check that the email, payment, CRM, or marketing connection you need is included in the free tier.
- Upgrade boundary: Identify the precise feature that requires a paid plan or add-on before building around it.
Six free contact form plugins to compare
| Plugin | What its published free offering emphasizes | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| WPForms Lite | Drag-and-drop builder, templates, email notifications, spam protection, and Stripe integration, according to its WordPress.org listing. | The listing identifies file uploads, conditional logic, and multi-page forms as Pro features. Confirm your must-haves are available in Lite. |
| Contact Form 7 | Open-source plugin with a modular design and official documentation and support information. | Its default setup does not store personal data in the database or send it to external servers, but optional integrations can change those data flows. Review each provider’s privacy terms. |
| Forminator | The listing describes a drag-and-drop builder, 20+ fields, conditional logic, spam protection, payment integrations, polls, and quizzes in the free version. | Verify the specific integration and submission-management features you need in the current release; the feature description is vendor-authored. |
| Fluent Forms | The WordPress.org listing describes a free drag-and-drop builder, conditional logic, 25+ fields, email notifications, spam protection, form and entry export, and migration from other builders. | Some advanced features are listed as Pro. Compare the exact field, integration, or workflow you need with the current tier chart. |
| Ninja Forms | The vendor says its core is free and lists 28+ fields and submission management. | Conditional logic, file uploads, and integrations are described as add-ons. Work out which add-ons a complete version of your workflow would require. |
| Everest Forms | The directory page describes a drag-and-drop builder, 40+ fields, unlimited submissions, form entries, and file uploads in the free version. | Confirm each required feature is still included in the current free release; the feature claims are promotional and may change. |
Which plugin fits which use case?
Choose WPForms Lite for templates and a guided builder
If you want a visual builder and templates for a straightforward inquiry form, WPForms Lite is a candidate to inspect. Its listing also describes email notifications and spam protection. Do not assume that the Lite label includes every capability: the listing places file uploads, conditional logic, and multi-page forms in Pro.
#1 Best Overall
Choose Contact Form 7 for an open-source, modular approach
Contact Form 7 may suit readers who want an open-source plugin and are comfortable with a modular setup. The project’s WordPress.org page says that its default configuration does not stealth-track users, write personal data to the database, send data to external servers, or use cookies. Activating certain integrations can change that: the privacy note says some may send submitters’ personal data, including IP addresses, to service providers. Review the data flow and provider terms for each integration you enable.
The listing reported version 6.1.7 and more than 10 million active installations when reviewed on September 30, 2026. That is a directory-reported installation count, not a quality or reliability ranking.
Rank #2
Choose Forminator if you want forms plus polls or quizzes
Forminator’s listing describes polls, quizzes, payment integrations, conditional logic, and 20+ fields in its free version, alongside a drag-and-drop builder and spam protection. It is worth comparing if you want more than a contact form, but confirm that the particular integration and entry-management behavior you need are included in the current version.
Choose Fluent Forms if free-tier conditional logic and export matter
The Fluent Forms listing describes conditional logic, email notifications, and form and entry export in its free offering, as well as 25+ fields. If export or branching behavior is important, check that the specific workflow and fields you require remain in the free tier; the listing also identifies advanced features as Pro.
Rank #3
Choose Ninja Forms if you prefer a free core with optional add-ons
Ninja Forms describes a free core with 28+ fields and submission management. Its add-on model can let you extend the core, but the total cost depends on the extras your form needs. The vendor lists conditional logic, file uploads, and integrations among advanced add-on capabilities, so price and verify those requirements before committing to the build.
Choose Everest Forms if its listed free entry features match your needs
Everest Forms’ WordPress.org page describes a drag-and-drop builder, 40+ fields, unlimited submissions, form entries, and file uploads in the free version. Those claims make it a candidate when entry handling or uploads are priorities; confirm availability and limits in the current release before relying on them.
Rank #4
Will a free plugin save submissions?
Do not infer entry storage from a plugin’s ability to send email notifications. The listings make different claims: Fluent Forms describes form and entry export; Ninja Forms describes submission management; Everest Forms describes form entries; the other cited feature summaries do not establish the same storage or export capabilities. If you need a searchable record, inspect the current plugin settings and documentation for storage, retention, export, and deletion behavior before launch.
Contact Form 7’s default configuration is a distinct case: its listing says it does not write personal data to the database. If you choose it, plan how you will handle inquiries received through email and check what any optional integration stores or transmits.

Do you need a separate SMTP plugin?
The plugin descriptions establish that several candidates can send email notifications, but they do not establish that every WordPress site needs a separate SMTP plugin. Notification support is not a guarantee that messages will reach an inbox. Configure the recipient address, submit a test message from the live site, and check both the receiving inbox and spam folder. If notifications fail, investigate the site’s email configuration and hosting setup; the available evidence does not identify one universal fix.
Before publishing your form
- Confirm the free-tier feature set. Check the plugin’s current listing or tier chart for every required field, integration, upload, logic rule, and multi-page feature.
- Review where data goes. Check plugin settings, entry retention, connected providers, and relevant privacy terms. Update your site’s privacy disclosures as appropriate.
- Test a real submission. Submit the form on your own site, verify validation and spam controls, and confirm the notification arrives where expected.
- Plan for missed messages. Decide whether email alone is sufficient or whether you need stored entries or exports, then verify that capability before relying on it.
Other option: Formidable Forms
Formidable Forms is another possibility if your project extends beyond contact forms: its directory description includes calculators, quizzes, and data-driven applications. The cited page does not establish enough detail for a precise free-tier comparison, so check its current feature boundaries against your requirements.
